I have given some of the most hated films in both genres positive reviews and I am not ashamed of that fact. When I came across this film, I was excited by the prospect of seeing Steven Seagal fight vampires, but what I got instead was a film so shitty that I had to rewatch the entire Mad Max trilogy to extinguish the foul mood I had after watching it. This film certainly doesn't work as a horror film, but I figured that it would be a fun time-waster like a lot of other actions film I've watched. When it comes to action films, I am a person who will willingly admit to enjoying many notorious entries of the genre (The Crow: City Of Angels and The Crow Salvation, Judge Dredd, Joel Schumacher's Batman films, Ballistic: Ecks Vs. Sever, On Deadly Ground, Highlander II, III, and Endgame, all of Andy Sidaris's softcore porn action films, Robocop 2 and 3, some Uwe Boll films - just to name some), but this film is too terrible even by my incredibly low standards. And, although this is only the fourth Steven Seagal film I have seen, this is the worst one I've seen yet and I find it doubtful I'm going to find another film in his catalog that I would hate more. Against The Dark has a wide variety of problems. The story is absolutely horrible and poorly constructed. I had a great deal of difficulty following what was happening and I was also completely disinterested as well because of how botched it is. The acting is among the most dreadful I have ever seen since everyone seems bored with their roles and are completely wooden. Even though Steven Seagal isn't a particularly good actor, his performance in this film is awful even by his usual crappy standards since all he did was mumble his lines. The film also proves to be a disastrous slow-burn horror film in which the characters aimlessly wander around the hospital and eventually lose sight of what the original goal even was. Not even when gory violence occurs does anything of interest occur since all those scenes either feel stilted or they are off-screen. Steven Seagal also fails to bring any of his martial arts skills into this film since all he does is lazily swing around a sword or shoot the vampires (or mutants, whatever the hell they are. The plot also can't decide what these creatures are). Against The Dark is easily among the worst horror films, worst action films, and the worst Steven Seagal film I've seen yet. Avoid it at all costs.

Davis made this just before Dallas rescued him from this sort of bottom of the barrel exercise. The film offers proof that an Oscar, in this case Dorothy Malone's, doesn't guarantee quality work in the future.
