(gb) wrote: The film itself leaves me with some mixed feelings, as does the man on whom it is based. Gerard Butler always gives a good performance, but the script is uneven and the first half of the film not very engrossing. I also have some very strong reservations about the real Sam Childers' methods--they are in direct opposition to the words of Christ on the subject of answering violence with violence or even defending oneself, but when the lives of children are at stake, and saving those lives not only from death, but also the soul devastation that is the life of a child soldier, I that cannot condemn, even at the cost of my moral compass.

It's a great unique story, amazing acting from everybody, a photography that leave you speechless. It's a must see. Sean Penn has fun with his character. He plays with it. The way he moves and plays with his shy quietness but that one scene where he lets everything out and confesses showed that he is more then a soft spoken child like oddball. The best thing about this movie is that it never worries about being a commercial success. It's an artist telling his story his way. My one complaint about this movie and I felt that it did hurt it somewhat was the relationships in Sean Penns characters life. How they were connected was never really fleshed out and it bothered me. But it's really a small portion of the story and shouldn't get in the way from enjoying it.

Les Blank's film, in my opinion, does a better job of portraying the insanity and spirit of Fitzcarraldo than the eponymous film itself. The similarities between the character Fitzcarraldo and Herzog himself are endless. Despite Blank's poetic filming of the amazon jungle, despite all of the conflicts the cast and natives encounter, and despite the documentary footage displayed, the heart of this film is the essence of cinema. This movie is about film-making and the art of it; its passion, its plight, its entirety. Herzog closes the film by stating, "It's not only my dreams, it's my belief that they are yours as well, and the only distinction between me and you is that I can articulate. And that is what poetry or literature or film-making is all about. it's as simple as that. I make films because I have not learned anything else. And I know I can do it to a certain degree. and it is my duty, because this might be the inner chronicle of what we are, and we have to articulate ourselves, otherwise we would be cows in the field." If you really let those words sink in, you truly begin to understand this man, this film, and really, cinema itself.PS: If I ever make a tribute to the bat shit crazy Werner Herzog, I will definitely call it "Overwhelming Fornication."
(nl) wrote: Hollywood Shuffle is a very entertaining comedy that mixes humor, wit, and nuttiness with issues in social problems and struggle for human dignity. Hollywood Shuffle centers on an aspiring African-American actor looking for a career in acting while stuck in a dead in job. He manages to find luck when opportunity opens a new door for a film, but has one major flaw: racial insensitive. Director, writer, and actor Robert Townsend then centers on his character Bobby as he faces the dilemmas over the degrading roll he is to take and the effects it would have on him and the community, but more importantly, his family. I would say Robert Townsend manages to pull a decent job and bring light some of the issues that young African-Americans may face in their quest for a career in acting. There is however some huge flaws in the film that involve homophobia and sexism although the sexism displayed, but I do not think a lot of viewer got it. Still, I would have to say that Hollywood Shuffle is comical with a good supporting cast and issue.
