Lives Worth Living

Lives Worth Living

The documentary intersperses archival footage with first-person interviews with disability rights activists who fought discrimination such as Fred Fay, I. King Jordan, Judi Chamberlin and Judith Heumann, and with legislators who helped draft and secure the passage of the ADA, including Tony Coelho and Tom Harkin. From the beginnings of the disability rights movement, when veterans with disabilities returning home from World War II began to demand an end to discrimination and for better access to employment and other social opportunities, Lives Worth Living traces the history of the movement in the United States in roughly chronological order. The film documents how, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, activists with disabilities began to adopt the some of the tactics and strategies used by civil rights activists a decade earlier, including marches, protests, and civil disobedience.

Courtney B (kr) wrote: Director Rebecca Thomas really shows her cinematic chops in her new film "Electrick Children." She constantly frames her angelic star Rachel (Julia Garner) in direct lighting, leaving her shimmering. This lighting motif continues when Rachel makes it to metropolitan Las Vegas, and she's surrounded by the electric neons, a superb metaphor for her first foray into the "real world" and a beautiful contrast to her dusty Mormon community. The entire movie is a progression from darkness to the light. The first fifteen minutes especially seem to be nothing but night-shots in the desert Utah village, but the movie ends in a sunny Vegas suburb. This progressive lighting is perfect to represent Rachel's growth as both a character and a person.Electrick Children is a true "indie" film. Not only does the cinematography highlight the unique and fascinating setting of a strict Mormon society, juxtaposed against the metropolitan Las Vegas, it also juggles mutiple heavy topics, such as pre-marital pregnancy, Mormonism and the theme of coming of age.The chemistry on screen is mind blowing, with a superb performance from Julia Garner, splendidly supported by Rory Culkin. Billy Zane also blew the audience out of the water with a cerebral and intriguing role as Julia Garner's father.

Then the cover even states a "fast paced supernatural teen slasher". Wow, what a bullfaced lie. This was a boring as they come, hardly any slashing, very little blood spilled and these 90 minutes seemed to last forever. This was utterly terrible and a total waste of my time. Don't waste yours...

He enlists his old buddies (which is why the actual old home movies of the guys as children work very well) to improvise around a basically very simple story. Dialogue wise, this works extremely well. Swedish movies are more often than not stilted and theatrical, but the conversations between especially Holger, David and John flows smoothly. The juxtaposition of the sleepy small town life with stifling conversations at the local pub about the weather and the local soccer team with the heartfelt and intimate discussions between Holger and David is particularly delightful. That said I had a hard time coming into the movie until the last third of it. Before that it possessed too many of the elements I hate ?? loose story, no direction in the dialogue, weird close ups, strange and (for the viewer) inexplicable bouts of emotions. One is constantly asking oneself where this movie is going, is it a documentary, is it fiction, what? Unfortunately, when the documentary mood is replaced by a forceful move forward story wise, the easy dialogue slips and is replaced with a more scripted and directed feeling. For me, this last third is however what saved "Farvl Falkenberg". All of a sudden it was actually possible to see some sort of direction even in the previous parts. So if you like slow paced movies about Swedish small towns with innovative camera angles and careful editing, this is a winner. Or if you are more into male nude bathing, there is quite a lot of that too?

Don S (us) wrote: This is some boring sci-fi. Humans abandoned Earth when aliens that feed on fear took over. Earth has become a hostile planet for our kind, so that is exactly where Cypher Raige and his son wind up crash landing. Will Smith's roil is a total waste. Jaden Smith can't act his way out of a wet paper bag. The only character with any spunk, played by Zoe Kravitz, is dead and only appears in flashbacks and as visions. Don't waste your time.
