Maybe if you grew up in that era or in a home like that you can relate more, but I can only watch so many movies that like to paint the 50's and 60's like this. But I'll probably never watch it again. It's all really well acted and all. The dead beat step dad and the reckless bad kid. You've got the trope 1950's promiscuous, single mom who goes from one terrible boyfriend to the next. Starts off pretty strong, but eventually gets a little tired

5 stars out of 5. Not a Chaplin film you'd expect, but a superb dramatic piece nonetheless, I give Limelight 4. From The Artist (2011) and its silent film star pushed out of the spotlight by the technological advancement of "talking pictures" to Birdman: or the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance (2015) with its alcoholic, washed-up actor searching to remake himself in spite of his past success, neither fully captures what Charlie Chaplin could in Limelight. There have been a number of recent films which have tried to do a similar plot to Limelight justice, and each has taken their own spin on it. One is a psychosomatic depressed ballerina, the other a textbook alcoholic comedian struggling to find relevance. But what speaks to the audience the most is the flawed nature of the characters. The fact that Calvero (Chaplin) was famous for the same schtick, and now he finds himself irrelevant perhaps speaks to Chaplin's alienation in Hollywood due to his outspoken opinions on world politics at the time. I mean, if we were to name one famous actor who excelled at playing a "tramp", Chaplin is the only one who would come to mind (although Buster Keaton, who also appears in the film, might come close). What's really interesting about Limelight is it feels almost as autobiographical as it does groundbreaking. Films like The Dictator (1940) and Monsieur Verdoux (1947) certainly have their amusing moments, but work better as social commentaries, or at least are more direct about their message than the earlier films like The Gold Rush (1925), City Lights (1931), and Modern Times (1936). Chaplin will always have the little idiosyncracies in the way he moves, but when they're applied to a washed-up drunk, suddenly they take a much more serious turn. While it is rare to find a film by/starring Charlie Chaplin that isn't uproariously funny, the depth of the drama of this piece certainly shows the range everyone's favorite silent actor could perform

Recommended. It's been done with bigger budgets and bigger name actors, but Larry Cohen's low budget down and dirty New York really has a charm all its own and is a great snapshot of an era that I never got to experience. A really well-conceived tale of the rise of Tommy from shoe-shine boy to crime lord and how it effects those around him

Sure it is crammed full of cliches and life lessons but it is a heck of a lot of fun and I almost like it better than the first film

Sci-fi fans will love the Star Wars/Trek archetypes that have been assembled but, must concede the story boldly goes nowhere. An imaginatively fun cast of intergalactic species team up to save one planet's people from genocide at the hands of a war-mongering spacelord in this Roger Corman classic

classic mad mel film they dont make them like this anymore

A missed opportunity. Just not enough good material to work with, Carvey even has to resort to old SNL standbys like George Bush. Carvey was one of the best SNL had to offer but it simply didn't translate into a film career

While this film isn't for everyone I mist say that it should be given a shot. Goat man is his stand in father and major part of the movie. His two parents seem to send mixed signals to him and he is torn between the two of them and what they both want for him. A good coming of age story of a 15 year old boy who goes to a Preparatory High School called Gates (The Taft School for all of us locals who know its true name). Some might say the story line is a little dull, but I don't think it was meant to be over the top or extremely dramatic at all. This is a very unique and well done film tho. Filmed about 5 minutes down the road from where I live I must say I am a tiny bit biased
