PHILOSOPHICAL/PSYCHOLOGICAL DEPTH (out of 2 stars, where very shallow = 0; shallow = 0.25 or 0.5; somewhat deep = 0.75 or 1.0; deep = 1.25 or 1.5; very deep = 1.75 or 2.0)---> 1.0 <---Well, despite many cliches present in the movie, it would deserve a recommendation, had it not been for its ending. Does the director really believes the audience is so weak that it couldn't handle a sad ending or that it is so naive to believe in a happy one?! As the "Last Seduction" the film did an adequate job in portraying some of the quintessential female characteristics, especially when it comes to sex, money and manipulation of men. Although the movie is quite a bit more contrived than "Last Seduction" (especially the ending) I'd still recommend watching both of these movies for those who are interested in understanding certain self-serving aspects of female psychology. ii. (ag) wrote: There is a lot about this movie that I liked - MOST of the styles, the performances of the main actors, lots of the dialogue. Sadly, there is some problems I find with the story, a lot to do with potentially more interesting characters which were never used... The relationships of Rusty James didn't get much focus where there could have been just a little more development, but thats a nitpick. My main point is the relationship between the Motorcycle Boy and the Cop... The feud does not build tension at all, and barely stands on anything, meaning that it doesn't feel as if it really carried or built up to what came at all... sure, the cop picks on him, but it doesn't actually raise any kind of tension beyond minor smalltalk, and we don't get to see much about the character... I have not read the book (I mean to) but if these problems exist there as well, then I would pick these points there as well. Despite this, and a few other stylistic choices that don't work as well (the charicters can sometimes be very OTT...) this is still a pretty good film. I just feel as if it could have been more, especially with Coppola at the wheel.Oh, and Nicolas Cage has a mullet. Just saying. 3.5/5
(de) wrote: One of the loveliest films I've ever had the pleasure of watching. Great chemistry between Garland and Johnson that sizzles towards the end; as he realises she is the woman who he exchanges letters with we watch as he falls in love with her, and likewise with Garland's Veronica Fisher as she makes the discovery. The film is set in a music shop and we are treated constantly to musical numbers throughout. Garland's performances are as usual strikingly touching. Great use of subtle but effective comedy in the film also.If you enjoy the remake 'You've got mail' then give this version a go, I guarantee it shits all over it.
