Trevor L (mx) wrote: This is a mixed bag of a movie: Visually this is a great looking movie. It looks just like the Superman animated series (which is good news to fans). The bad news is that there are some MAJOR changes in characterization. Since Clancy Brown and Corey Burton did not return to reprise their roles as Lex Luthor and Brainiac, respectively, we got Powers Boothe and Lance Henriksen to replace them. While Lance Henriken is good using his low, gravely voice in a good performance, Powers Boothe is NOT a good choice and his performace is terrible. It's the fact that he's characterizing LEX LUTHOR, a villain who's known to be an intellectual mastermind who's crafty, charming and ruthless, is portrayed here as a moronic, sleezy, and mind-numblingly stupid. I mean, it boggles the mind just how wrong they depticted Lex Luthor. The reason i make such a big deal of this is that it detracts from so much of the story; getting back to the story, it's very contradictory. It appears to be in the continuity of the Superman animated series, yet it's in this movie that Lex Luthor and Brianiac meet and another villain at the end makes his "offical" appearance. What? If you had to make a choice between Superman: Brainiac attacks and Superman: Doomsday, i'd go with Doomsday. While this appears to be that Superman TAS movie we all hoped for back in the day, this clearly isn't it.

blanky a (ru) wrote: While the film is more than a few degrees removed from fairy-tale reality, it too often dips into that same well of prefab emotion, at the cost of its own backbone. Around the Bend is reminiscent of that creepy old drunk who refuses to stop consoling you at the bar when you're not particularly depressed. It's the kind of movie that wallows permanently in the characters' superficial idiosyncrasies, and the director's hyper-sentimentalized obsession with male bonding. An ounce of such mawkishness goes a long way, and Around the Bend offers at least a greasy pound. Director Jordan Robert's debut oozes more sap than a freshly cut Christmas tree, and were it not for an incredible turn by Walken, it'd be best left forgotten.
