(br) wrote: You wouldn't think a movie with Jeff Bridges, Justin Timberlake, Mary Steenburgen, and the beautiful Kate Mara would be so dull. None of theses people give a horrible performance, there's just really nothing there. It tries to be an evolving drama, but it fails in that sense. It tries to be humorous in sections, and it fails at that too. The story is pretty typical. Carlton Garrett(Justin Timberlake) is the son of baseball great Kyle Garrett(Jeff Bridges). They haven't talked for awhile, but since Carls mom is having medical issues and wants to see Kyle; Carl has to go get him. Carl also brings along his ex-girlfriend now friend, who is contemplating marrying another guy, Carl and Lucy's(Kate Mara) relationship isn't very believable either.Overall the movie is watchable, just nothing special or of particular interest. Easily forgettable.

(au) wrote: Oh dear, I can't believe I'm saying this, but Shanghai Surprise, a movie nominated for seven Razzie Awards and one of the worst flops of 1986...I actually enjoyed it. Shanghai Surprise is an admittedly silly film with one poor actress and often not making sense, but like many cult films it has a certain charm (plus a rockin' sound track) that somehow makes it all work. Shanghai Surprise stars Sean Penn as Glenn, a supposed "bounty hunter" who is stuck in Shanghai. Seriously though, I thought he was a tie salesman. He is taken in by a charity organization called Helping Hands by Gloria (Madonna), a missionary newly helping out the group. Apparently because of Glenn's ability to speak Chinese, or because of his "rugged charm", they deem him the perfect man to recover several pounds of high grade opium. Along the way, he gets himself into more than he bargained for, along the lines of jewels, torture, evil policemen, betrayal, and yes even love. It's pretty clear from her first minute onscreen, Madonna is the worst actress in this picture. She seems unable to express any sort of emotion at all. Many of the actors in my fourth grade drama class had better acting skills than she did. Often times she came across as just a whiny brat. Then again, her terrible acting skills made Sean Penn look like Marlon Brando in comparison, who seems to be on autopilot throughout Shanghai Surprise. Plot wise, the movie throws in so many plot twists within the last fifteen minutes that those who didn't care about the film in the first place will probably care less. Yet, even with all this, I liked Shanghai Surprise. Partially because of the soundtrack, which is almost completely done by George Harrison, as he was also a producer for the film and even made a cameo appearance. While yes his songs in this film seem to have an Indian influence (how he pulled that off I'll never know) and are a little cheesy, I still found it really good. Also, there's just something likeable in the sheer badness of this film. It's one of those so-bad-it's-good films. Most'll probably dislike this, but for this critic it has my stamp of approval. It's not the actors at their best, but Shanghai Surprise is certainly a little surprise. See what I did there? (Real rating: 67%)

(fr) wrote: An excellent and fairly accurate portrayal of the Battle of Britain in 1940 with an all-star cast to boot.
(us) wrote: Randolph Scott films are usually credible, but as an actor his characters are always one dimensional, so it is especially refreshing to see him alongside Lee Marvin who adds a lot of colour to this movie with his role.
(fr) wrote: Very funny Bob Hope movie, filled with his unique brand of dry humor. Vera Zorina is a bland love interest, but the supporting cast is great, especially Victor Moore. Great costumes and fine sets.
(es) wrote: This was a fantastic action movie. A ton of killing scenes, and a serious plot about human trafficking. Very dramatic, emotional, and suspenseful. Highly recommended!!
