Michael S (gb) wrote: This is not the strongest of the Hammer Horror Dracula series. The camerawork is still excellent, as are the sets and characters. The music is great and the acting is good. The flaw comes from the fact that Christopher Lee's Dracula really doesn't do a whole lot in this film... mostly standing, glaring menacingly... and counting like he's on Sesame Street. Of course, that could be due to a serious change in the story. Originally, Lee wasn't supposed to be in this movie- except for the opening flashback scene. By the time this movie was made, Lee was getting tired of being Dracula, so they were going to change over to a new vampire- Lord Courtley who would've been getting revenge for his murder at the hand of the three "respectable gentlemen". Due to distributors' fears about audience reaction to NOT have Lee in the film, Courtley transforms into Dracula... who counts down as his "servant's" killers are killed as well. The story would've been stronger if they HAD gone with Courtley as the vampire risen from the grave to exact revenge. That weakness doesn't detract from the overall fun of the movie, but does pull it down from the higher altitudes it could've attained. I still enjoyed this movie, but you can see that it's the start of the end of this line of classic Hammer Horror films.

Edgar C (ca) wrote: Incredibly stupid-looking and cheesy, which makes it smarter than what the pre-production standards ever ambitioned. This cool action flick has basically everything, including an odd camp aroma from the 80s that few movies maintained. Talk about irony...55/100
