Mark G (jp) wrote: Not a bad doc but a bit too sanitized, especially given the subject matter. At times it seemed more like a banal episode of Biography rather than an in-depth look at an ex-gay porn star. I think it's admirable how Wrangler was able to achieve all that he did but instead of an unbiased examination of his life the film just ends up being an extension of what he has based his entire career on: exaggerated, shameless self-promotion.

Jennifer M (jp) wrote: This film was definitely not what I was expecting and I have yet to decide whether that's in a positive or a negative respect. One thing I wil say for certain is that America - despite all the talk we have about sex in film and on television - is actually quite modest in comparison to films from other countries. I stumbled upon this film last summer, before Avatar, before I knew anything about Sam Worthington, but I never got around to watching it until recently. The good: Sam Worthington peaked my interest in Avatar (like everyone), but he never got my full attention until Somersault. He was intriguing and mysterious and you really couldn't but want to yell at him because his character, Joe, is cluelessly confused. The background of Australia is absolutely beautiful; freaking cold, obviously, but lovely. The bad: Hiedi got on my nerves. Big time. The character is sixteen but I don't remember being that naive or fascinated by everything. Her curiosity got to the point of childish. The more of her you watch the more you wonder if she has any idea of what she's doing or if she's lofting through this nomadic life, completely unaware. All in all, good film. I understand why it received so many awards from AFI and the Cannes Film Festival.
