Mahaleo

Mahaleos voices and music have accompanied the people of Madagascar ever since the collapse of the colonial regime. Yet, even after 30 years of success, the groups seven musicians still keep their distance from the world of show-business, and remain deeply committed to helping their countrys development; their professions range from surgeon to farmer, physician to sociologist and member of parliament. Accompanied by the groups rhythmic melodies, the film follows the singers through their daily lives, giving us a glimpse of the far-reaching social and economic problems of the Malagasy people. The combined talents of the Brazilian, Cesar Paes, and the Malagasy, Raymond Rajaonarivelo, have produced a work that is both ethereal and concrete, poetic and political.

Seth L (jp) wrote: A movie with some laughs and a lot of heart, that has a great moral message on how not to judge people with how they look. You'd expect the Farrelly Brothers to be crude and offensive but it isn't. The jokes are good and when it gets serious, it succeeds. It's a great date movie and I still enjoy it to this day. Cukoo! Cukoo!

Dylan D (es) wrote: Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron works on practically every level. It's an externally gorgeous film and a fully satisfying inward journey of one animal's unbreakable spirit, its bonds of friendship and trust, and its struggle to re-secure the freedom it was born to enjoy. The picture builds its narrative on minimal dialogue and none, save for a few choices instances of voiceover narration, for its title character. It's a film of beautiful simplicity, effortless harmony, and deep connections with its audience. In short, it's a triumph of its genre and an example for others of its kind to follow.

JeanAntoine B (br) wrote: The typical love stories of Almodovar, always so crazy and unpredictable. Beautiful actors building a wonderful story even though it started by being so messed up!

Ray D (br) wrote: Tom Hanks goes IIIIIIiiNSANE thanks to a thinly disguised version of Dungeons and Dragons, starts seeing Minotaurs on the streets of New York, feels that he has to kill to protect his spells, etc in this made-for-TV film that's found a new life on DVD. The film has sort of found a second life in recent years as a campy comedy cult classic (4 C's in a row! What do I win?)-- possibly because Dungeons and Dragons-type roleplaying games don't have the dangerous aura that they used to--but at the time, it was intended as a serious thriller. Tom Hanks gives a fairly intense performance, and a good deal of the movie's effectiveness, either as a thriller or a comedy, is watching him come unglued, but like Reefer Madness, there's a sense that the film you're watching is so sincerely wrong-headed that it's hard to recommend it, if only because it won't understand why those kids are pointing at it and laughing.Notable in that, like the 1970's King Kong remake, the World Trade Center features in the plot's 'climax', such as it is.
