Jacquot is a precocious youth obsessed with the cinema and eager to break free of his father's orbit (although the old man is far from an ogre). It's a blissful existence, despite the encroachment of the odd Nazi, and one could perhaps level accusations that the movie whitewashes the worst of the era. But, to a kid, it's likely that fantasy would have been uppermost in his mind in relation to reality, so such harping would be churlish. The film includes interviews with Demy (dying of AIDS at the time) and excerpts from his own films including The Umbrellas of Cherbourg .

Isaac Hayes just goes around mowing dudes down in the middle of the street and no one seems to care! Pimps, ho's, gunfights, car chases and a soundtrack that fit perfectly.
(jp) wrote: This may contain SPOILERS. You have been warned. It starts off as a fairly believable seemingly realistic story of a woman's conversion. She is nowhere near as "lost" as usual for these types of movies; she actually seems normal. Then it turns into a film about the difficulty of maintaining belief in a world that doesn't admit it. If this course had been pursued, the film would have been quite good and powerful. Ending the film in the desert, especially right after Sharon tries to kill herself, would have been very effective (yes a movie called the rapture without a rapture...my kind of film). But no. This is the US after all. There is a heaven but it's the kind of heaven that won't offend anyone. It's up to you whether you get in, or whether you damn yourself, like Sharon does. Isn't that nice and new agey? It reminds me of the end of Inherit the Wind, when Spencer Tracy reveals he believes in god, just a god compatible with evolution (a watchmaker, one would suppose). Here we have a heaven open to all, as long as you are willing to say you love "god," whatever that means. A heaven like Sharon's would have at least fit with the story and though I might totally disagree with it, at least it's got backbone. Oh yeah, I gotta say that Mimi (or makeup or wardrobe) did a great job of looking subtly thin.
