Rick R (au) wrote: Curandero (2005)Eduardo Rodriguez's bloody Mexican horror movie starring Carlos Gallardo (who was in Robert Rodriguez's "El Mariachi" from 1992). Robert Rodriguez is the producer. This movie mixes Mexican black magic, Mexican cartels, and the police. Rodriguez plays it as a perfect B movie. There's lots of flashes of blood, gore, violence (and a flash of T & A) in the same washed-out color.Don Carlos (Gallardo) is a young man in a small Mexican village. His late father by the same name (Jose Carlos Ruiz) was one of the Curanderos, a type of folk healer or medicine man; sort of a shaman. Although the young Don Carlos doesn't exactly share his Father's beliefs, he does seem to share his visions of evil around him.A Mexico City police detective, Magdalena (Gizeht Galatea) is looking for Don Carlos to help her cleanse the jail and police station that has been left in a bloody unholy mess when a mass murderer/gangster escapes. Everyone seems to doubt the existence while at the same time fearfully believing in all of this evil, including Don Carlos himself. If you're a big fan of horror and the crazy pacing of a Robert Rodriguez style movie, then you'll have good time with this one.

Francesca J (de) wrote: i loved this movie when i was little, and i searched for it for years when i was older. The best bit is when they play the pan flutes (although they are quite obviously not actually playing) It's funny now that i have watched it and i'm older the two main characters 'mio' and 'jum jum' are totally gay - watch how they interact. still love it though.

Steve W (ag) wrote: When a great actor performs, his performance may be so convincing that the audience may not recognize him. So it is with Anthony Hopkins and his character Kostya. His face is in front of you, but it's a few minutes before you realize it is Anthony Hopkins. For this performance alone you should watch the film. But, there's more... Goldie Hawn plays a serious character. Her eastern European accent is done well and her acting is impressive. The story begins with Joe (Hal Holbrook),a middle-aged journalist, who has won some literary awards and is currently working in Moscow for an American newspaper. His much missed ex-wife has recently died and there are a few things of hers in his apartment so he decides to sell them. He goes through Kostya, a local friend and informal broker, to sell her possessions. At this rummage sale is where our story gets moving. Oktyabrina (Goldie) is a young Russian woman who is in Moscow without papers. She is mysterious. She holds her friends at a distance while she flits around with her own mostly unknown agenda. Joe is immediately entranced. He finds out that a kindly Russian official (Gregoire Aslan) is seeing her. Kostya is spoken for, but he is Oktyabrina's friend. The characters are comic-like from time to time, but this is not a comedy. Though it ends sadly in a somewhat abrupt way, it is well worth watching. note: There is a Swedish dvd in widescreen. You must have a player capable of playing Region 2, PAL, discs of course. When you insert the disc into the player, pick a Scandinavian language to get to the main menu and then you can remove the subtitles

Nate T (nl) wrote: Classic. If one is to watch it as a double bill, pair it with The Public Enemy (1931). Might as well since the "disclaimer" at the beginnings of both films reference both films.
Corey n (it) wrote: This is the sequel to the King Solomon's Mines movie of the 80's. This movie is on par with the first one made. Richard Chamberlain is back in the role as Allan Quatermain. Also is Sharon Stone as the love interest. Much like the first name of the movie this story is about Quatermain out to find the Lost City of Gold. This movie has some some solid action and fight sequences. An okay story overall. Though the story and dialogue is campy at times. But if you enjoyed King Solomon's Mines then you will like this sequel.

But after it's over, you get to thinking about it, and realize that hey, that was funny. And then you watch it again. And then you start quoting it.
