This classic film is based on a classic Urdu short story 'Aanandi' by Pakistani writer Ghulam Abbas. It deals with a brothel at the heart of a city, in an area that some politicians want for its prime locality. They rally up against the brothel and its inhabitants in the name of morality, and soon everyone in the area jumps on the bandwagon. The politicians offer to put up an alternative residence for the prostitutes, only this place is miles away, isolated from the city. The madam of the house has no choice but to comply, but by the end things take a (logical) turn for the better. After all, men will be men

Jackson C (kr) wrote: One of the best-selling Chinese film ever, but the quality is simply atrocious. Not only is the film featured on a really simplistic and lackadaisical storyline, it is also poorly executed with plot-holes and head-scratching scenes all over. The movie tries to bring over a hallmark of all Chinese movies nowadays, beautiful use of colours, but in Painted Skin it is unnecessary because it does nothing to aid the quality of the film. Odd lines are added, perhaps to make the film more comprehensible to laymen, but really takes the overall experience of the film away from the audiences. Chinese mythology is definitely an area of film worth exploring, as there are so many fascinating stories, but I hope nothing of this quality would be made again. Three of the greatest Chinese actors grouped together, but their effort is wasted in this poorly made film. Overall, an unworthy prequel to the first film.

Also: between stuff like this and the fact that westerns used to be such a big deal, were the kids of yesteryear just more historically inclined? Not that this has any particular accuracy, I just have a hard time picturing children sitting still for a movie about British colonialists racing to plant their flag in uncharted Africa before slave traders do. (And while I think of it, the whole climax with them racing neck and neck to see who plants a flag first made the vagaries of land ownership seem even weirder - it's not like this is a scavenger hunt, so what exactly does a witnessed flag planting prove again?)

John C (ru) wrote: Rarely if ever turn a film off but this was beyond awful- decent cast but shocking acting with the slowest delivery of dialogue, had all the energy and charm of a damp towel- so glad I'm not watching it anymore, genuinely feel a weight off my shoulders
