(de) wrote: Curly Sue is a cheesy but charming 90's movie from John Hughes. If you're a hard-bitten intellectual and you're into serious films and don't like to get taken for a sucker with cornball manipulation, this isn't your film. It's not great and it's not deep, but it sure does have a heart. That it has been written and directed by John Hughes should not come as much of a surprise, because he has a knack for stories that tug at the heartstrings, exploiting basic human sentiment. It is really hard not to wonder if this is the same John Hughes who wrote "The Breakfast Club". The movie is sweet and silly in an innocent, naive way, although a little heavy on the visual gags and body humor for my tastes. This was also Hughes final film as a director which could in part be due to the fact that he and Belushi didn't agree on many aspects of the character causing production to be halted numerous times. It's rather barebones from a writing and a technical standpoint, but I don't think Hughes intended it to be a particularly ground-breaking cinematic feat. The heart is in the story and the characters and they satisfy completely. This is an endearing movie that's pleasant enough to fill your next free afternoon with nostalgia. This movie also features the on screen debut of a little known actor named Steve Carell.VERDICT: "In The Zone" - [Mixed Reaction] These kinds of movies are usually movies that had some good things, but some bad things kept it from being amazing. This rating says buy an ex-rental or a cheap price of the DVD to own. If you consider cinema, ask for people's opinion on the film. (Films that are rated 2.5 or 3 stars)
