Bnb J (jp) wrote: In Jatt James Bond, the beautiful Zarine Khan, with milky-white supple skin, makes her debut in the Punjabi Movie Industry (which seems to be growing despite a fairly proportionate number of unsuccessful films). The protagonist and undeniable hero of the film is Gippy Grewal, who has grown as an actor with every film, and the refinement in his acting is admirable. He has very good comic timing, and has a humorous way of delivering his Punjabi dialogues, which works for him and the audiences. Zarine, on the other hand, adds an element of realistic beauty with her curvaceous body. She looks every bit the part of a "Punjabi kudi" in her colorful attire. The film is funny, interesting, and romantic in a very innocent way. Noticeable almost immediately (from the scene of tea being poured) is the superior cinematography and camera angles that have been employed. Parixit Warrier & Sandeep Fransis have done a very good job, and set the standard high for upcoming films. This is the first time in Punjabi films that we see sophistication in the camera operations. The storyline (written by Jas Grewal) is captivating, and we don't ever feel that the film is overstretching or dragging, except for one of the songs in which Zarine and Gippy go clubbing. The portrayal of love between the leading cast is very pure, and is beautifully depicted through the home that they dream of building. It's a family film that you can watch with anyone because nowhere do they show inappropriate skin or use vulgar/double meaning language. In fact, it conveys important societal messages. In one of the scenes, when some hooligans bother Zarine ( who is a teacher) in front of the school, Gippy takes them to an abandoned warehouse type place because he doesn't want to beat them up in front of children. This and other similar messages are seamlessly integrated into the film.Jatt James Bond gives us a very close, and much needed look into the realities of poverty (which Punjabi films usually tend to overlook ). The writer of the script has masterfully weaved the story of poverty with romance. The series of events that unfold when Zarine's brother (Vindoo Dara Singh - who looks better in a turban) tells Gippy that he can marry Zarine when he has enough money to buy a home, constitute a major time chunk. The direction by Rohit Jugraj is praiseworthy, and speaks to his understanding of cinema. The supporting cast deserves special mention for their convincing performances whether it be that of a "sharaabi", a laborer, a police officer, bank manager, or an MLA. Gurpreet Ghuggi, Yashpal Sharma, Mukesh Rishi, Vindu Dara Singh, Avtar Gill, Shahbaz Khan, and Karamjit Anmol were all perfect in their parts, and no one else could have justified these roles more.Overall, this film works because everything including the cast, story, screenplay, direction, and cinematography was professionally done.

Stefan G (it) wrote: Who would think that a movie about gender equality could be as boring and trite as this film? For me, the first sign was that it was produced by BBC Films, who also produced the dreadful "Starter for 10". While the film does a decent job in its condemnation of 60's sexism, I can't shake the feeling that the film is stuck in the past, never mind the fact that the film's overall style isn't faithful to the 60's at all, save for some of the music. Also, a lot of the focus seems to be on the women on strike, but what bothers me is that the lead character, along with much of the cast, is completely fictional. I know it's difficult to actually represent the striking women, but when you devote a supposedly historical film to a character that didn't even exist in the film's setting, that's when it becomes nonsensical. Britain is full of drama films with historical settings, and for me, there's a good chance that most of them suck. Even though there's some strong drama, and a genuine attempt to break from the familiar archetypes of the 60's, there's no escaping the fact that it just felt bland.

Mikael K (jp) wrote: When Gael Garca Bernal and Diego Luna star in a film, it automatically hints at quality, even if the film is about professional soccer of all subjects. Rudo & Cursi? is indeed rather watchable for a film with the premise of two brothers competing in sports, if not anything nearly spectacular. A lot of tedious dialog, clumsy comedy and predictable plotting are involved, even if the stars do try their best to make it work.

Dennis G (au) wrote: I initially thought that, from the title, this was a doc about piracy, or something to that effect. Instead, it's a biopic on Abbie Hoffman, an ostensibly important figure in 60's radicalism and the anti-war movement.Despite the criticisms though, I still found the movie to be enjoyable.

Eric R (mx) wrote: It's kinda funny how I have now seen most of Hartley's films and yet when I first start to watch Simple Men, it took me a few minutes to adjust to his unique brand of dialogue. Simple Men is a charming, funny and spontaneous film that features poetic yet almost experimental dialogue in hwo the characters interact with each other. Simple Men is about two brothers who are on the run; one wants to find their revolutionist father, the other is running from the authorities after being double crossed by his girlfriend, which he loved, during a robbery. Like pretty much all of his films, the plot really doesn't matter all that much. It's a road movie of sorts that addresses the relationship between men and women; love and desire. Harley's viewpoint on the these themes are fascinating and refreshing, just like pretty much everything he has done. Did Hal Hartley ever make a bad movie???

Brandon W (au) wrote: After exams, the history class in high school are watching Flyboys which I never saw a dogfight movie before. I can see why the history teacher like this, but for me, I just find it all right. The acting is decent, and James Franco is great in it. The story was just there, and the characters are a bit forgettable. It's really slow to which it is just boring. The best part of the film, are the battle scenes. But even for that though, it's just decent, and is not that exciting until the final battle. The chemistry between Blaine and Lucienne is nice, and the result of it is actually very effective and wouldn't think that it'll happen. Flyboys is a forgettable movie that has good things in it, but just was too boring for me to get invested in.
