Matthew K (jp) wrote: When i first saw this film I was a lot younger, and I loved it, reasonably funny script, quite a lot of action and plenty of guns, so it was a hit in my books. Fast forward to now, and my view of the film has changed ever so slightly, but I do still like it for what it is, a S.W.A.T. action film adaptation of a TV series, apparently, that likes to be a little bit funny, with a fairly decent, and definitely capable cast. Before watching the film again I'd forgotten that Jeremy Renner was in it, and I was happy. Him before the big time of The Hurt Locker and all that followed but even here he is still a very good actor. He plays a good 'good guy', but he's probably a better antagonist, just something about him, he seems like he's got a mean streak in him, and this is no exception. The team that is ultimately assembled is a good mix of a bit of everything (covering most ethnic backgrounds too, tokenism; check). The leader, Samuel L., is just great. It's Samuel L. He's always great! LL Cool J provides the comedic aspects of the film, he's the funny one. Michelle Rodriguez is the 'take no guff' female cop who everyone underestimates because she's a woman, never heard that one before... With the addition of two already known, but fairly anonymous, characters TJ and Boxer. As we see the progression and the gelling together of the squad the banter that flows makes the scenes in between the action sequences quite pleasant. The team just all seems very cool and it looks like it was really, really fun to shoot, especially the training mock ups, most men's fantasies, to be that really cool, but deadly man that we all want to be deep down. To its credit, the film could have easily fallen into the trap that some action films fall into, some morbid competition of how high you can make the death count and how big an explosion you can create, CGI or otherwise. Instead it tries to take a more holistic approach to the story, following Farrell's character from disgrace to ultimate triumph. From the disgraced policeman forced to work a menial job to the hero of the force. The main issue that's tackled by the film throughout is the conflict between what's actually the right thing to do, and what the powers that be decree are the right things to do, fighting through the red tape essentially. What gets Street kicked off S.W.A.T. in the first place! There is also the case of the old school versus the new school. Samuel L. representing the 'old school'. A little bit of a cliche, the old methods are the best yadda yadda yadda. To dismiss it as just a stupid action film would be quite naive, as what the film sets out to achieve, it does. A really slick, polished action film. It's not a genius film, but it's not bad. The action sequences are really cool, and there's a sense of authenticity about them, I don't know what it is, perhaps its the fact that they're fake, well, the majority of them anyway for the training portion of the film. I assume quite a lot of research was put into discovering how S.W.A.T. train and prepare, and the only thing that made you realise that they aren't 'real' within the film world is the Jimi Hendrix played over it. Bit of a give away. But they're dynamic, fast paced, and tense, like a good action sequence should be.

Mickey Hargitay has some of the best lines. Obssessed with The Crimson Executioners "perfect Body" fun stuff here. Definatly deserving to be on the Something Weird label.
