He was a drug user and dealer in the neon clubs of Tokyo but is ratted out and is shot and killed by police. His spirit leaves his body and we follow the spirits point of view to relive and go back between flashbacks and post his death. The film is truely visual between beautiful and grotesque. We see the neon glow of the shimmering nightlife of the clubs and the gross and dark side of drugs and death. The concept truely is awesome and how it's shot is really cool. On a creative standpoint I think the idea of the P.O.V from a living to dead character is really great. But I will admit there are faults that I say personally I wasn't a fan of. The film really drags on and pads out a lot of the time. This movies only 2 hours and 23 minutes but feels almost like 3 hours. It's slow and not everybody will enjoy this movie. There are lots of points that made me uncomfortable and kind of felt unecessary. All in all I respect this movie and liked it. Probably won't watch it again cause it's more or less a film I liked watching but won't watch it ever again. Once was enough for me.

(ag) wrote: It appears audiences are still misunderstanding the film. That's a bit ironic since it's a comedy of errors where all the characters are either misunderstood or lying about who they are. The insane plot twists are based as much on the insanity of the characters and dialogue. There is lot of dialogue and not one misplaced word. The fact that film sails by even with all the verbiage is tribute first to Capote and Huston, but the actors, especially Bogart and Jones are dazzling. There may have been too many layers of irony and sarcasm coming to thick for most of the early audiences. But this is a masterful work.
