(ru) wrote: Wickedly horrible dialogue mixed with a semi good script makes for a mediocre movie. A rough Guy Ritchie-esque movie that has a lot of potential. Maybe if the main character was a better actor and not the writer/director and if the writer wrote better dialogue and the action scenes had action in them then this movie would be very good. But for being a semi low budget film and the fact that most of the scenes go roughly 6-9 minutes long without cuts i would have to say it is a decent film.

All these things and more are in none else but Dario Argento's bizzare shocker, Phenomena. Certainly one of the strangest of the maestro's films Phenomena has grown on me quite a bit since I first saw it. The story is like a fairytale told by someone with a bad fever. That may sound like a dig but it's something I really sank my teeth into. The movie is more or less and fantasy-giallo movie in the vein of Suspiria. Like Suspiria it involves an American girl (Jennifer Connelly) in a foreboding and unfamiliar place. I love this movie despite all of its flaws and believe me it has them. I know so many people hate the heavy metal that pops in somewhat abruptly but I've grown to appreciate it as adding to the disorienting experience. I think this movies biggest flaw is having so many off-the-wall ideas but not seeing them through to their full potential. Like the insect telepathy. Phenomena is barmy, and absolutely deranged and I love every second of it! I would highly recommend it to someone who is a fan of Argento or surreal horror in general. Always see for yourself!

Is he Everyman? To a degree, since few of us have the courage to leave our comfort zones, and who really knows how other people live in their minds? Tom Courtney is brilliant and Julie Christie shines, with classic Brit character actors--Finlay Currie, Mona Washbourne, and Ethel Griffles--bringing their solid performances to make a great old classic of the sixties.
