Mockingbird Don't Sing
On November 4, 1970 on The CBS Evening News, Walter Cronkite reported on a true, horrific story that was about to rock the country. A 13-year-old girl was discovered in the small Los Angeles suburb of Arcadia who was still in diapers, barely able to walk and unable to speak. Kept in severe isolation by her parents with virtually no human contact for more than 10 years, she was confined to her bedroom, tied to her potty-chair and left to fend for herself.

(de) wrote: I'm happy to have finally given this latter day Schrader film another look, as my recollections of it consisted mostly of fuzzy day-glo scenes from the portions set in the '60s.Painting a rather unapologetic portrait of a man allowed to indulge his excesses, the film is amazingly watchable and well worth a rental at the very least.Recommended.

(kr) wrote: I haven't seen this one in a while, but from what I remember I was really very impressed. The low budget shows, but that just makes it all the more amazing. Gory, surreal with only a slight amount of pretentiousness. I knew when I saw this, Stanze was a filmmaker to look out for and except for one stinker, I've consistently liked his output.

Normally I don't care for these kind of one dimensional comedies, however this comedy has character depth and the entire cast is wonderful in their respective roles which made me forget how simple the storyline is.

(fr) wrote: Campy gory black comedy with funny accents and bad acting. Somehow they turned a story about retarded aliens harvesting human meat into a goofy horror comedy. Brilliant B-movie schlock.

(ag) wrote: Fritz Lang's 1933 feature is not only a sequel to his 1922 silent film, Dr. Mabuse: Der Spieler, but to his other masterpiece, M, made directly before this. By all accounts Lang was reluctant to return to the world of Mabuse, but something in the story drew him back in. He uses this film to puncture some of the grand-standing of the Nazi party, then in ascendence in Germany, and which saw him self-exiled shortly after production had ended. The Testament of Dr Mabuse is a brilliantly constructed crime thriller that prefigures much of the modern age - surveillance, technological trickery - and blends with the serial format much beloved in earlier cinematic years. As a consequence not every scene in the film feels necessary, or even earned at times, but at its core this is a thrilling, entertaining movie with some wonderfully tense sequences. I saw this film on the Eureka Masters of Cinema label's Blu-Ray edition (released in the UK) and the film looked gorgeous, despite being almost 80 years old. A wonderful cinematic treat for the cineaste.

On the bright side, adrift in a sea of tedium: the fist fight is cool, the tongue things are nasty and there's some impressive gore. But I only remember one of those things from the games.Contrary to Rotten Tomatoes insulting consensus, fans of the games are going to be the most disappointed of all.
