Irvin C (br) wrote: An imaginative, precocious 12 year old boy grows up in a highly dysfunctional, crazy family. He theorizes he must have been conceived by a tomato contaminated by sperm ejaculated by an Italian farmer. And that's just the beginning. This began a bit rough for me. The tone is all over the place. The scatological humor isn't very funny and the film's too broad and quirky to be taken seriously. But eventually it found its footing and won me over. It's a very nice, sweet film for people who will not be offended by scenes involving a sex with liver and cat rape.
Douglas L (au) wrote: This baseball flick is a treat from the 80's. It takes sex and mixes it with the philosophies of baseball, or makes the attempt to mix the two. The film takes itself very seriously but does not hold well today. For the most part the jokes aren't funny anymore and the musical queues occur too often to suggest that this happy go lucky, feel-good film just keeps on giving, when really the moments are fairly ineffective and melodramatic. There are a lot of situations that occur without any explanation and the viewers are meant to just assume that things just happened to fall into place that way. This picture was sculpted to have "a lot of heart" as I am sure the producers said over and over again. I felt though that despite the acting, which was pretty good, there was little to this picture. I watched it feeling almost nothing at all. I liked seeing Tim Robbins as a younger guy performing and Susan Sarandon and Kevin Costner as well. As the film was nearing its end I felt that I learned nothing save for how to make a "sexy" formulaic baseball film but in that formula there is definitely something inside that reads classic. The attitude that the picture evokes is definitely one that holds the spirit of the sport that I can remember somehow but do not feel is around anymore with the sport. The great American pastime is well and alive on the surface of this picture but in its core I feel there is too little enthusiasm. Or perhaps it is served in a flavor I do not prefer.

Eric K (de) wrote: Movies like this make me glad I've avoided marriage up to this point. :) A story about a man desperately in love with a woman who continually screws him over, time and time again. Conned into marriage and robbed of millions, he gets back together with her only to be talked into selling his business, before being poisioned to his deathbed. Unconditional love. With the plot of this film, it would have been better if Louis had wound up alone, dying in a snowed-in cabin at the end of this film. Such a fate would have been fitting for his obsessive passion and willful blindness. It is said that beautiful, manipulative women can get anything they want from men. This film is a stark, bleak, painful portrayal of that mantra.

Marcus H (ru) wrote: This film is the quintessential drug movie. Skip the D.A.R.E program and just watch this. Amphetamines, Benzodiazepines, Cocaine & Opiates; this mix may not kill you but it's certainly going to try. The drama here revolves around the relationships of these friends and family. Altogether another fantastic film but yet again not journey for the weak at heart. This one will leave the boldest of the bunch; pale in the face. It's a visual spectacle as well; for Aronofsky to try such rapid edit techniques and experimental camera work at the time (2002) was truly avant guard. His next visual leap can be witnessed in 2006's The Fountain. Yet another of his signature films, intense and graphic. The performances here though are ahead of their time and the initial NC-17 rating will keep many from viewing.
