Paul D (fr) wrote: A decent take on a quirky band of musicians trying to get into post-war Iraq. Humourous but some scenes make good points on life in the region. It does get overly deep towards the end of the film when it doesn't need to be. However it is beautifully filmed throughout.

David F (mx) wrote: Though set during the time of the Russian occupation of Afghanistan, Majidi's tender love story could have been set 1,000 years ago - the theme of a woman disguised as a man and the unrequited passion of her initially callow but eventually earnest discoverer are timeless. The pace is slow, deliberate and meditative - the photography and locations (away from the drab construction site) are poetic and mesmerizing, the performances are naturalistic and believable, and the plight of the Afghanis forced to flee their homeland to find work in Iran is palpable and lamentable. I only wish there was more to the plot, and that there was a bit more humour to be found. In spite of all that, it is a beautiful film, and a refreshing change from Western romances.

Michael M (ru) wrote: I'd never seen this movie all the way through before but it's a pretty solid entry into the 80's movie catalog. All three leads are phenomenal actors and they play their parts well. Albert Brooks really needs to be in more movies as he's such a likable Jew. A couple things I don't understand: 1. Holly Hunter's sex appeal. I think it's something about her mouth mixed with that Southern twang but I never found her attractive in the least. 2. Joan Cusack. How did this behemoth find work? I mean she's a monster. Must be her cool brother.
