Thomas P (fr) wrote: The perfect male bonding movie - I called my Dad after seeing this, and only did that previously once - after watching U-571.The only females in the whole film are natives to the places the ship visits.Equal parts gritty and elegant, this is a triumph of brotherhood, almost a right-of-passage into male adulthood.

Brian A (fr) wrote: I figured out the twist ending after 40 minutes and never really got into it.

Dorian P (mx) wrote: All things considered, this may not be Lee's most annotative film, but it's his most endearing. It's fresh to see a black family in the 70's without falling back on a predictable story and rehashed characters. Lee doesn't attempt to tell you anything specific, but this story of a 9 year old spunky girl living her life in a house full of brothers, definitely speaks to you. The soundtrack is great, as well.

Jon C (ag) wrote: powerful, deeply moving, provoking and well-spokenanother film about Latino immigrants escaping to the U.S. in hopes to find freedom, solidarity, and opportunitythe brother and sister are very sympathetic as they try to flee from the dangers of the law and the harsh reality of their native landit really spoke to me; Im proud to be Guatemalan and understand much of the corruption and oppression that lurks in Mexico and many other parts of the worldfreedom is indeed not free and these characters do contemplate where they truly belongwell-intentioned, hard at times but mostly speaks to the audience"El Norte" succeeds in its own way

Alessandro F (ag) wrote: Truly remarkable movie: Its lenght and graphic scenes might put off some viewers but watching the uncut version is worth it. This odissey of a young gangster (played by Robert de Niro) and his friends is never boring or dull despite its four hours lenght. Everything is flawless: the faultless perfromances, the recreation of life in New York during the 20s, the impeccable direction with outstanding cinematography and transitions, not to mention the legendary and emotional soundtrack by Ennio Morricone, and the incredible screenplay that touches on so many topics, Sadly underappreciated movie, that is nevertheless a nostalgic and epic masterpiece.

MJS M (mx) wrote: I?ve always had a love hate relationship with John Ford, love the filmmaking hate the politics. One of the most notable periods of Fords career was the period from 1939 to 1940 when he released four movies, three of them classics. The classics were Stagecoach, Young Mr. Lincoln, and The Grapes of Wrath, then there was Drums Along the Mohawk which is said to be quite good, but not up to the level of the other three in the winning streak. I felt compelled to check it out, and I?m probably going to concur with popular opinion. This was Ford?s first color film, and it has that really beautiful look of other late-thirties color flicks. I also liked that the film was a look at the American Revolution?s western front fighting against Native Americans allied with the British, not a section of history that?s examined very often. Aside from those two interesting aspects, the film is mostly lacking. The characters were boring, and the film?s view of Native Americans seemed unsavory even by Western standards.
