(jp) wrote: Listen Up Philip tells the story of three characters as they deal with the self obsessed writer Philip Lewis Friedman. Firstly we deal with Philip himself. He is about to publish his highly anticipated second novel and is feeling suffocated by the hustle and bustle of the city and the deterioration of his relationship with his photographer girlfriend Ashley whose success he resents. He takes up the offer of staying with his friend and mentor Ike Zimmerman in his country retreat in order to focus on writing. The story shifts to Ashley as she picks up the pieces of her failed relationship and moves on with her life. Thirdly we see a glimpse into the viewpoint of Ira as he tries to teach Philip some life lessons and deal with his estranged daughter.A rather black comedy reminiscent of 70s Woody Allen. It's even filmed in a similar style. The character of Philip is quite the arsehole and it's impossible to find any sympathy for his situation. A bit of lightness wouldn't have gone amiss. The parts that focus on Ashley are much more likable. She is brilliantly portrayed by Elisabeth Moss. Jonathon Pryce's Ira is also a more likable character. He's basically an older version of Philip, but there is more humour with him.You don't have to like the main character to like the film and that is definitely the case here. This is a very amusing and wry look at the world of writing and teaching. Cleverly shot and very entertaining.

Horribly dated as one of Cravens huge misfires that starts off PG friendly before making a bizarre left turn into jerky sporadic violence. Great fun for bad 80's horror movie fans and a look into the soul of a truly uneven creative director.

Dick about the Chief of PreCrime, which is a department where the police goes to get the criminals from actually doing something bad in the future based on 3 psychics, and when it showed the chief's vision of when he murders someone, John Anderton (Tom Cruise) runs away from PreCrime and he tries to prove his innocence as he doesn't know the person that he is going to kill in a day or 2. I was pretty excited to see this again as I've seen this and liked it, but it had been years ago, and I wanted to go back to this. So after going to rent it and see it, Minority Report is one of the most inventive films that I've seen from Steven Spielberg's career. Tom Cruise did a fantastic job in this that I think it's one of his best performance. The special effects look amazing to this day, and it brings the world they created some life to it, even some of the effects that they created are actually used as actual things in the recent times. The writing by Scott Frank and Jon Cohen is very well written that brought in a lot of thought provoking moments. The action scenes are a lot of fun to watch, and the characters are very three-dimensional, especially since the main hero isn't perfect as he has done stuff that are not good. I know people have a problem with the ending being inconsistent to the overall film, and I'll admit it does look and feel different from the film, I was honestly fine with it, and some theories on it, made it seem that it was intended to be that way to be faithful to the adaptation that people might not realize. Minority Report is a fantastic film that it is one of Steven Spielberg's best films.
(ru) wrote: Though the movie has on and off points simply because it's a low budget film from Australia, it literally does what 50 movies about the end of the world tried and failed. It's graphic without being abusive, it's touching while remaining honest, and for fucks sake to my knowledge it's the first to have no possible happy ending. The world simply goes as promised without vague artistry, alien saviors, or Morgan Freeman. Highly recommended especially since the main character is a dead ringer for a Michael Bisping look alike lol.
