(jp) wrote: Many auteurs have made at least one film about filmmaking, and Rainer Werner Fassbinder's entry in that canon is a fairly unique one. The film explores the aimless pursuits of a drug-addled film crew, and it casts a spell of malaise through its abstract plot and minimalist camera work. Fassbinder's strongest cards (i.e. subdued use of music, and vicious black humor) are present too, and at times it feels like he's applying his sensibilities to an Antonioni film. Static in its plot, and a bit cold towards humanity, Beware of a Holy Whore isn't among the director's best works, but maybe that's also because this film is the closest he came to self-criticism.

(ru) wrote: By the time he made "Ivan the Terrible" Eisenstein had moved from employing film montage juxtapositions to creating juxtapositions within the frame so the feel of the movie is very different from his early films. Between that change in style and the high contract lighting and the overwrought pantomime acting style, "Ivan" looks almost like a parody of an early silent film - despite being a talkie. Add to that the mostly static framing, the majestic but often sparsely furnished sets, the elegant and sometimes extreme looking costumes and hair and I was often reminded of nothing so much as the old Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon serials I watched on television as a kid - but with Ming the Merciless as the hero - and without much of the action. Not unrewarding, but not the Eisenstein I would recommend.
(us) wrote: Never boring, never cheesy and always punchy, Lethal Weapon deserves its status as one of the all time classic action films. Lethal Weapon boasts quotable dialogue which is delivered brilliantly by Gibson and Glover. It refuses to partake in the modern day action cliche of shaky cam, favouring easy-watching well choreographed car chases, shootouts and fights. It's not the best Christmas action flick out there (thank you Die Hard), but it's certainly a complete package.
