(fr) wrote: Outstanding flick! Awesome whodunit! Loved Bill Pullman as the amphetamine driven super detective and Ben Stiller is excellent as his assistant. The way the mystery comes together as the movie progresses was pure genius. This isn't one of those movies where you figure everything out half way through the film, it was more of a WTF moment as soon as the brilliant Daryl Zero spells everything out. Some dark subject matter but I'd call it a black comedy more than anything.

Anita Skinner plays Denise, the recent survivor of a terrible plane crash who's starting to believe that death isn't finished with her. One can see elements of this in the Final Destination series, but Sole Survivor's trying to play a different, slightly more mature game, all the while giving us a very interesting take in the zombie subgenre. Skinner, who looks a good deal like Chloe Sevingy, happens to be a great heroine and the mood and atmosphere are so thick, you could cut them with a knife. Just wait until the horrifyingly downbeat and haunting ending. This one's a real lost classic.

I wonder if the surrealist genius of Talbot Rothwell will ever be properly recognised? Anyway, who can knock any film which contains a scene in which Charles Hawtrey is arrested for cottaging!

It's an epic scale swords and sandals type of affair that feels more like a campy/kitschy version of the lavish Hollywood Biblical epics from the previous decades than what Leone would produce a few years later.Yeah, it doesn't really fit in all that well with the rest of his work, and I get the feeling that he treated this as "just a gig", but it's still kind of fun, enjoyable, and has some decent moments.Actually, the whole movie is pretty much just that: a strung together set of moments and set pieces that feel pretty jumbled, and not very cohesive. There's not much of a strong narrative. Instead, we get a laundry list of everything you'd expect from a movie like this: conniving schemers, lots of slave torture and an eventual slave revolt, stadium fights, and the titular statue being awesome and destroying lots of stuff.Yeah, this sounds really nutty and goofy, but it is fun. It's not a great movie, and it is overlong, but it is a fascinating look at Leone's beginnings.
(kr) wrote: Just as crazy as the last Crank, censored bits on horse tracks, strip club gun fights, full body turrets and driving police patrollers while high on drugs. After falling from the sky from a helicopter and landing on a car and slamming to the ground, someone's after his heart. He's replaced with an artificial heart and this time not only is trying to keep alive, he's trying to get his heart back. What's all this about Crank 1 being way better than this Crank? Same sort of thing, crazy, fast paced and in your face.
