(au) wrote: Shopgirl has a lot of winning elements on the screen - who would question Claire Danes in a romantic drama? - but nothing excels. The tale is sweet, one of a lonely saleswoman named Mirabelle who works at the gloves counter in Saks Fifth Avenue looking for love - taking a chance on Jeremy (Schwartzman) and later Ray (Martin), only for things to turn out quite as she had hoped. Danes drifts through her role with ease and grace, and the film, had it been a bigger success, could have set her career up for a revival in the 2000s (however, that revival was to come later, in the TV series Homeland), but it was not to be so. Martin and Schwartzman hit most of their marks, but neither of their characters ever quite seems to gel well with Mirabelle's character, although the film makes the viewer idealistic for romantic possibilities at first. However, the film almost feels as if it never could have arrived at romantic bliss on such a small scale, and this is the biggest letdown.

Dominic Cooper is impressive in the dual roles of Uday Hussein and his hapless / ambitious / trapped / complicit 'double' Latif, who was press-ganged into service, but ended up getting in far too deep. The atrocities meted out by Cooper on everyone and everything around him become almost too grotesque for words, but he sticks to his performance with striking conviction.
