(ag) wrote: It it were not for Eddie Jones great performance, this movie would not be worth seeing. To the movie's credit, it was much less sappy than Million Dollar Baby. However, the trainer being so ashamed of his sexual preference seemed a little out of date. An ok movie if you really like boxing flicks.

(ca) wrote: Blow is one of those gangster/drug trafficking films that tend to come out on a semi regular basis that seem to fall victim to classic films in the genre in terms of ripping off parts that are iconic and doing a mediocre job of making it there own or at least suffer from being pedestrian on themselves. In this case, Blow looks towards the iconic Goodfellas and Scarface, robbed them of some of the soundtrack, camera moves, swearing, narration and Ray Liotta in an attempt to focus on the life of George June played by Johnny Depp and his attempt to find fame and stability within the drug world with incredible highs and disappointing lows. Because of the lack of reinvention, the film just hits all the notes you would expect in a film like this and surround Johnny Depp with a decent supporting cast at the time including Penelope Cruz, Rachel Griffiths and the aforementioned Ray Liotta but alas, the film lacks a certain electricity to make it fresh. Not that I am surprised but disappointing.

(jp) wrote: If it weren't for Bernie, this would certainly be the best true crime tragicomedy about a gay man living in Texas, that simultaneously most certainly did the crime he was prosecuted for and was also the victim of the story, where the main actor is mainly known for his wacky comedy roles but takes an impressive dramatic turn, that I've seen in the past few years. After roughly the first 15 minutes or so the over the top humor is mostly toned down for a surprisingly touching, and topical story about identity, the American dream, and even the failures of the prison system. For a movie that I assumed would be an hour and a half of Jim Carrey falling down stairs and having exaggerated gay sex, I was impressed.
