(au) wrote: One day someone is going to create a serious yeti/sasquatch film. Until then I can cope with these cheap B movies with excellent levels of hilarity. The yeti changes from dodgy costume to dodgy CGI. They only use CGI for the running and last act Superman jumping scenes. The best moment was a conversation where "shoot" and "face" were used no less than 3 times. Unfortunately, the film is bogged down by a bunch of idealistic cunt characters that writers seem to think we will like and applaud. I wanted to stab that stupid "don't eat the dead people to survive" bitch so much. Her justification of "if we eat these bodies we're no better than it" was hackneyed and irritating, as was her complete contempt for human lives as she dooms the rest of the party to certain death. The film would also be quite offensive to those that have had to eat human flesh to survive, if it weren't for it's tacky charm.

Thatkind of sums up my overall feeling about 500 DAYS OF SUMMER, althoughthe narrative turns take you through a much wider range of emotion. Thebasic plot is of the "boy meets girl" variety, with the "boy" beingplayed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and the "girl," Zooey Deschanel. However, this is not your typical romantic film. Zooey Deschanel is the"Summer" of the title, and the story hops backwards and forwardsthrough Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Summer's 500 day relationship. For starters, the broken-up chronology, although somewhat of a clichat this point, was useful insofar as it withheld plot secrets until theright moment, regulating the stream of information toward the viewerand maintaining interest. Of course, it helps that the two leads arequite likable and have pretty good chemistry together, in thatawkward, post-modern way. I also thought that the message aboutfate/destiny being an illusory concept rather apropos in a society thathas (largely) moved beyond traditional gender roles, as the filmdemonstrates to a high degree. In a world where those kind of barrierscome down, it can be scary and more confusing, but that's often thebeauty of it as well. Without things prewritten or having to conform toa set "script," we are free to interpret events as we choose and moldour lives to the form we desire. The only cog in the film's machine is,unfortunately, Tom, who initially displays a dangerous level ofcomplacency and hesitancy, which proves detrimental to his relationshipwith Summer. By contrast, Summer is a strong, but not invulnerable, female character. I really liked her, whereas Tom had to grow on me(development!). Overall, the film is certainly a shot in the arm to thewell-worn romantic dramedy. There were some nice meta touches, i.e., adance sequence, and a split-screen sequence which shows "Expectationvs. Reality." Some of the social commentary did seem a littleon-the-nose, and it didn't exactly move me emotionally in the greatestway, but I laughed a lot and was constantly thinking about the messagethe film portrayed. So, definitely one to check out if you haven'talready.

(ca) wrote: A walking cliche throughout that is unrealistic, stupid, over-the-top and predictable. Van Damme is as usual terrible yet once again conveniently has martial arts skills despite being a detective. Same old stuff, Avoid at all costs.

(mx) wrote: Very under-rated, considering how great it is to find out what Gonzo is, exactly. An alien, decent. Decent plot, decent characters, decent cameos, decent music, and(SPOILER ALARM!) a most decent tug of the heart-strings as someone searches for their origins at a high cost. (SPOILER ALARM!) and manages to escape the FBI with help from friends and meet their relatives from another planet at a beach with a bunch of college kids and hippies. Sorry.Anyway. It's very good. The Muppets will never go out of style.Fashions will, trends will, forgetful movies will, but not The Muppets. Decent.
