"Manderlay" is a bit far behind the excellent prequel "Dogville" (2003) especially on a camerawork, a production and a staging style. The characters seemed too idealistic so they hadn't got many chances to shine on their own aside from Bryce Dallas Howard who refreshed the same role that Nicole Kidman used to play. Still, a great story is yet worth to be investigated by moviegoers in political means rather than an art of filmmaking.

(kr) wrote: It seems to be primarily a showcase for Negrete, a sort of hispanic Dean Martin with rakish charm, macho (but not too macho) swagger, and a good set of pipes. It's utterly predictable and the sets are kind of cheap, but it's passable as light entertainment. It's just so out of place in the Bunuel ouevre, then again so are a lot of his other Mexican director-for-hire films. This is probably the least interesting of them, however, with only one or two brief glimpses of the Bunuel we know and love.
