(jp) wrote: Don't give up! This movie starts incredibly slowly and boringly, but ramps up the pace and drama the more it progresses. Ultimately turns out to be a very powerful drama, and an exploration of 1950s prejudices and hangups (some of which, unfortunately, still exist today). Though the movie is clearly meant to spark thought and discussion on abortion, director Mike Leigh doesn't really take a stance. In some ways this is good, as it means you can enjoy the movie as a drama, no matter what your view on abortion. In some ways, however, I wish Leigh had taken a stance (preferably pro-choice), just to make it more controversial. Imelda Staunton is superb in the lead role and deserved her Best Actress Oscar nomination (losing out to Hillary Swank for Million Dollar Baby). A powerful movie. Just be patient.

(us) wrote: This is easily one of Woody Allen's worst films. It feels like the film made in the movie, half assed. The set up is pretty solid. Val Waxman is a hasbeen director and his ex-wife wants to hire him for a gangster movie. The new husband (Treat Williams) is apprehensive, but the name will bring in money. What follows is a painfully unfunny blind man routine for Allen, who is not convincing at all. There is a scene where he's not sure where Treat Williams is, but the voice is speaking to him and he should be able to follow it. Throw in a rushed, lazy, and contrived ending, and you get this movie. The only thing I liked was Treat Williams, and the son character. Everything else was just plain shabby.

(it) wrote: Really good war movie with a great cast playing an interesting collection of characters. What's interesting is that even though it's an obvious patriotic morale-booster (it was made in 1943 after all) it doesn't shy away from the horrors of the war in the east. Even though it's fun to watch now, the characters get picked off one by one, they get sniped, die of disease, one even gets tortured to death by the Japanese and left to hang in full view of the remaining defenders. I can't imagine what it would have been like watching this while the war was still on - what if you had a father/husband/brother out there? It's strange when you think about it. What else is interesting is that the final battle sequence is surprisingly violent and intense with brutal hand-to-hand combat that doesn't pull any punches. It may be a patriotic flag-waver but it's an entirely entertaining and often moving war movie even 60 years later, a testament to its quality.

(fr) wrote: When he was looking for a turnaround in his career, his life turned around. The main host of the last concluded the most controversial awards ceremony, Chris rock, donned in the multiple roles behind and front of the camera. I almost missed this film, because I have never known its existence. All the above, I'm surprised to learn it was written and directed by Chris Rock, because I haven't watched any of them. Is it really worth a watch? Absolutely yes.Chris played a famous comedian in this, who desperately looking to turn into a serious action hero. On the other hand, he's getting ready for the grand wedding with a reality star. But one day decides to give an interview for a journalist. While spending together for some time, they both open their heart and talk everything about them from the past to present. The remaining part is to disclose how the interview ends, once they find out each others true identity. The performances were brilliant. I mean it is a simple drama, mostly they talk about their personal life and profession, but inside that the both lead actors had given a good show. It was a slow start, and I did not understand where the story was heading. Because everything looked aimless and random scenes, other the some flashback parts, until the final scene. If you wait patiently till that far, you might think it was a late strike, but makes all the sense. Yep the whole narration was defined with that 20-30 second clip. The screenplay is to be praised for that. Might be slightly an underrated film, though, looks like more a television film. Finally, I have to mention those guest roles by other comedians which actually had less impact, yet appreciable for giving their hand for another comedian.7/10
(jp) wrote: This is a odd movie. The basic plot is a young American couple go the Greek Islands for a vacation. They end up having a sexual relationship with a young French women they meet there. The film stars Peter Gallagher, Daryl Hannah and Valerie Quennessen. The story is simple enough. Solid cast makes the movie work. I liked Daryl Hannah in this. Overall a hit and miss movie. Worth maybe a watch if your a fan of any of the main actors in it.
