Nostalgia for the Light

In Chile's Atacama Desert, astronomers peer deep into the cosmos in search for answers concerning the origins of life. Nearby, a group of women sift through the sand searching for body parts of loved ones, dumped unceremoniously by Pinochet's regime.

Bryce R (us) wrote: Not great, and I watched it immediately after Dark Knight Rises, this movie is good, and does a lot of things better than the original. The movie's style was true to the Spider-Man of animated series and comics; with his goofy, teenager, cocky trash talking. He does what most teens do when they are working, and that's have fun.

Gimly M (gb) wrote: Waiting... is incredible for three reasons.Firstly, it was one of the films that helped rocket forward the careers of both Ryan Reynolds (Green Lantern, Buried, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Smokin' Aces, The Amityville Horror [2005], Blade: Trinity, The X-Files) and Justin Long (After.Life, Drag Me to Hell, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Accepted, Dodgeball, Jeepers Creepers 1 & 2).Secondly, it glorifies what is in my opinion the best American Comedy ever made, Super Troopers, as well as Kevin Smith (director of Red State, Cop Out, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Clerks I & II, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Dogma, Chasing Amy, Mallrats)Finally, it's an American Comedy movie, and I paid actual money for it. I then watched it. I've watched it before. I'll probably even watch it again. BOOM! This probably means nothing to anyone who's reading this (there's also probably nobody reading this) but regardless, it's quite a big deal.Managing to take something as mundane as one day in a repetitive dead-end catering job, and make it even vaguely humorous is rather an achievement. You should watch it and play the other-other "The Game" (sidenote: I lost the game) like we used to in High School. 'Cause I'm classy like that.Seriously though, and I can't believe my thoughts even as I'm typing this, but I honestly think Waiting... is an underrated American Comedy gem, maybe I'm just seeing that comparatively, or with the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia, but I really do enjoy the film.76%-Gimly

Elliott F (gb) wrote: This is pretty bad. Mary Pickford won Best Actress at the 2nd Academy Awards (honestly, that's the only reason why I watched it) and she's decent, I suppose, but the movie itself is not. Pickford plays Norma Besant, a Southern belle who flirts with literally every man in her life (including her father, her interaction with him is sort of creepy) but whose virtue is compromised when one of her beaus wants to marry her. A lot of the acting is unintentionally hilarious (her brother, in particular, is obnoxious as can be) and the writing and sound is generally bad. I can forgive Coquette for being an early talkie, but I can't forgive it for being a bad movie by any standards outside of Pickford's lead performance, which still isn't that great.
