The directing, I think, is top-notch--almost all Schabel's other features are amazing--but this one is hampered by the screenplay: a real maudlin, telling and not showing, overblown effort (maybe because it's autobiographical) by Rula Jebreal.Right away, I noticed the simmering hysteria in a lot of shouted pieces of exposition masquerading as dialogue. The first scene of the prologue, for instance, is a crowd-pleasing Palestinian-American Christmas party where a lot of political issues are broadcast. A woman named Hind (Miral's future benefactor), seeing the refugees from the Deir Yassin massacre, takes them in and starts her own orphanage. Later, Nadia (Miral's mother) escapes sexual abuse and starts a tough life as an exotic dancer. Fatima (Miral's mother's benefactor), spurred to action by seeing the maimed in Israel's 1967 war, tries and fails to bomb a movie theatre... which happens to be playing the rape scene from Roman Polanski's REPULSION (on the nose there)... and winds up in jail with Nadia. It's all very complicated and extensive, but eventually Miral (played by Freida Pinto of SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE fame) grows up in the orphanage. Her naivete to Palestinian issues is shattered by a teaching assignment in 1988, and from then on she's torn in several different directions--loyalty to her father (who, despite putting her into an orphanage when he couldn't handle fatherhood, we're meant to respect); loyalty to Mama Hind (some bland 'education = power' idea); or loyalty to those fighting the First Intifada (purveyors of a lot of clumsy diatribes about the evils of Israeli occupation). I don't know about any of them.

And meet, if you dare, the violent and passionate Aditi Mahant - 'Meow' (Genelia D'Souza). Whatever you do, do not pick a fight with her. She scratches. And abuses. If you do get into a scrap, take cover till Jai arrives, as he alone can calm our snarling wildcat. Jai thinks Aditi's parents should have rinsed her mouth with soap when she was a child. Aditi thinks that Jai is the biggest coward she has ever encountered. Heaven has mixed up its apples and oranges. Rotlu weeps secretly for Aditi. Bombs' heart explodes for Jai. Jiggy applies golden mascara to his hair. Shaleen, well, she's probably the only one who doesn't seem a few notes short of a concerto. Jai and Aditi are perfect for each other (in some odd, distorted way, impossible to understand). Friends know this. Parents know this. Everybody knows this. But they both themselves does not knows that. Okay, this is an Aamir Khan productions' movie! A bit hard to digest. We have seen loads of such flicks (even better) in Southern cinema & this one is just new to Bollywood. That is the only reason, this movie is a mega blockbuster. Imran Khan, is a very talented & seems confident from the first movie itself. He has a good career ahead. Genelia, she has already done loads of such stuffs in Telugu & Tamil Movies, so it was not hard for her to act in the movie. She acts well, & looks stunningly beautiful. Manjari Fadnis looked gorgeous too. There are other new-comers too. But only Alishka Varde manages to perform well, she looks cute & beautiful as well. Rest are just okay. Also there are other well known actors such as Paresh Rawal, Sohail Khan, Arbaz Khan, Naseeruddin Shah, Rajat Kapoor. The background music is nothing good this time, though the songs are pleasant to hear. "Kabhi Kabhi" & "Pappu Can't Dance" are the best tracks. Abbas Tyrewalla's directorial debut, his direction is nothing extra-ordinary at all, in fact, it lacks good laughable moments. Just an average flick on the whole, just watch it for Imran, Genelia & Alishka

(au) wrote: Endearing human drama....handles varied cliched topics of 70's deftly...all the while keeping the focus on the family story....its about the messiness of life and how we deal with it....Mark Ruffalo is mesmerising....and so are the kids....and Zoe Saldana.....I hated the movie when credits rolled on..because i wanted more...and that says everything......
(it) wrote: This is more just a personal rating, keeping in mind I'm not a hardcore metal head. I intentionally wanted to see this film because I love demonic story play. Now, considering this was a comedy, I didn't find it all that funny. However keep in mind I'm not a metal head and probably missed alot of references towards Metal head culture. There were some grins here and there, but overall, I don't consider this a movie I'll be adding to my collection.
