Of Time and the City

"Of Time and The City" is both a love song and a eulogy to the director's birthplace of Liverpool, England. It is also a response to memory, reflection and the experience of losing a sense of place as the skyline changes and time takes it toll. The visual content of the film consists largely of archival clips of Liverpool from the 1940s to the 1960s, their nostalgic charm darkened by accompanying music and by the counterpoint of Davies’ dry, at times dyspeptic, voice-over narration. His voice thickens with emotion as he recalls the delights of juvenile movie-going or the ritual of a holiday trip to New Brighton, across the River Mersey, and hardens with contempt when he turns his gaze on the hoopla surrounding Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953.

Chris D (kr) wrote: Secret of the Wings isn't as strong or meaningful as other Disney Fairies films, but it still sparkles breathtaking animations, a smooth pace, and always fantastic voice-work by Mae Whitman. These films continue to prove that there was real effort into this Disney franchise.

Delphinus C (fr) wrote: (Having not seen the other connected movies, I was missing a lot of the backstory to some of these characters.)Extremely artsy-fartsy, and not in a good way. Slow, repetitive (sort of the point), not really an "exciting" movie.Extremely self-indulgent. Some interesting and unusual cinematography, but just as many pointless, blurry shots of nothing.I found the 10% sci-fi setting far more interesting, and I get than the real world setting is supposed to inform that, but it could have been better balanced, and probably shorter if they both worked together to progress the story. It's also weird that the sci-fi parts are in Japanese for some reason.Decent dialogue, for what that's worth when the story is so pedestrian. 40 minutes too long. The score was the most solid thing in this movie.

Zachary B (de) wrote: A classic fast paced gangster flick. Lawrence Tierney was dynamic as Dillinger... an amazing first role.

David C (ag) wrote: Groundbreaking in it's time. This is the film that kick-started the 'sixties 'kitichen sink' revolution. While it's the first it's far from being the best, though it's a powerful, well acted story of a man who gains material success at the cost of his soul. Simone Sigoret won an Oscar for this, a rare examaple of the Acadamy getting something right for a change. Shame Harvey wasn't equally rewarded.

Greg W (it) wrote: awesome film noir from the first noir cycle also betty grable's only non singing non dancing performance.
