Tony V (us) wrote: (***Spoiler Alert***) The story is about the cricketing equivalent of a football dynasty with plenty of black power analogies thrown in to make it into a social plot. While the West Indies team of the time was enormously talented and I am sure that racial prejudice was a big part of the era, I thought that the script-writer was story-fishing when he tied the team's exploits to, say, what was going on in South Africa at that time. It becomes all the more glaring when there's little or no soul-searching on the fact that a number of their players became turncoats and played in South Africa under the apartheid regime. And it's a known fact that the Aussies don't give a quarter to any sports team that's playing them at home, whatever their color. Just ask the English cricket team. So for the West Indies team to take the abuse they were subjected to personally and turn it into a race issue was another stretch in the plot. Also, I cannot understand what the difference between "I bowled to hit the batsmen" and "I didn't intend to hit the batsmen, but the ball hit them anyway" or something close to that uttered by Andy Roberts, is. I remember most of the stories from that time reporting that the West Indies bowlers were going to, in their own words, aim for the batsman. I felt that the comments of Holding, Roberts et. al. were self-serving defensive spin on the issue (maybe it's because they have mellowed with age). Still, the movie makes for some compelling viewing. I only wish there was more cricket footage.

When she turns 40 she reaches a turning point of her life and realizes that she really can enjoy all the aspects of her life, she meets a much younger attractive surfer and her friends begin to worry about her choice and think that she's reached a midlife crisis. She is happy and in love, could life be any better? I tought this movie was very romantic and sweet.

Tom K (mx) wrote: Just brilliant in every way -- first-rate performances from Travolta, Kathy Bates & Billy-Bob Thornton make it easy and addictive to watch over & over again. A compelling, fictional behind-the-scenes look at what goes on behind the candidate's run for office raises the philosophical question: "Does the end justify the means?" Is it OK to do bad things so you can get elected and do good things? This thoughtful, shocking, hilarious movie is required viewing for my senior seminar students.
