A pure drama about a middle aged single woman whose life was dedicated to her profession. Just like similar to the 'Finding Vivian Maier', except there was no photographies involved. Frankly, I was not predicted that this film would impress me a lot. Picked it to watch without an interest, but while a watch surprised and glued to my seat to the rest of the film. Even though there were fine actors in the movie like Guy Pearce and latest sensation Hailee Steinfield, it was a Kristen Wiig show. Apart from voice-over for the animations and other supporting roles, she was not seen in a top form recently. Her commitment to the character she played as Johanna Perry the live-in caretaker in the movie was inevitable to appreciate. Feels very real who fall for a teenagers prank that actually influence her life to turn it around. So how and what are the things to be done against the odds are displayed well.''The only thing worse thanfriendship is hateship.'' Kind of 'second chance' theme, if you get one you must seize it. Though, it was not that simple in the movie, but developed at a fair dosage of obstacles between 'the desperate' and 'the hope' to form balanced account. Don't consider it an inspirational, it was just pieces of common event that's happening everywhere, but creatively put into the texts and then cinematic. Commercializable title that did not suit for a realistic narration. Especially not in todays world, might have been a perfect title 20-25 years ago. Once you watch it the perspective will change that still movie like this are made for the silver screen, not direct-to-television, but what? Sadly commercially fails. If you observe closely the end scene, it was very practical to the real life. Whether we accept our fate as it happened or we created it, the flaws always remain, especially in a relationship. That's what the entire movie unfolds, how people cope with each other despite what they were before. A very well told simple story. Of course it was a slow narration, not because of the stretched from a short story, but to give the depth in the portrayal. This movie is for ardent drama fans like me, for a change others as well should try this little sweet movie.8/10

Nate K (fr) wrote: Worst movie I have haver seen. First of all it had a terrible plot line that left me with a hollow and terrible feeling. Second it was super long that leaves even the most avid movie goer with a full bladder and a sour bile in the back of their mouth. Third. This movie gives a terrible portrail of Mormons and Mormon missionaries. Overall... This movie just made me sad.

And that's a relatively well-known, critically acclaimed movie for goodness sake ! Blockbuster, Hulu Plus & Amazon instant video carries it, Netflix does not ! Not even as an option to save it, so my rating of it (4 out of 5) would factor in further recommendations. I have a hunch, that many of the "puritans" blaming this movie for "indecency" watch a lot of bad porn with no redeeming value as "art" every day. Common! We're in the age of the Internet, and the most explicit sex imaginable is available at the click of the mouse, and many are still obsessing over some brief & artistically necessary nudity in cinema ?! Ridiculous!
brian h (fr) wrote: An intelligent and genuinely funny movie about the film industry with an ensemble cast that play off each other with perfect timing and chemistry. State and Main demonstrates that David Mamet is more than a gritty dramatist. He can string together gags that are original and woven together in dialogue that nearly sings. Moreover, he lends credence to his setting with the subtle eccentricities of a real small town-- a pothole on Main Street that no one can miss, a legendary and mysterious arson spree, and a local team (Go, you Huskies) that sweeps the championship every year except one due to some unspeakable scandal. Zany doesn't have to mean silly or stupid. In Mamet's hands it rings true. The cast is incredible. William H. Macy, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Sarah Jessica Parker (in her best performance), Alec Baldwin, Charles Dunning, Julia Stiles ... the list goes on and no one misses a mark or an inflection. But finally, as in all works by Mamet, it comes down to the dialogue. THe cadences, the nuance. I have no idea what it means to get along like "dykes and dogs..." but the line was perfect. For those who laud the Farley Brothers and Apatow, this film might leave you wanting. But if you prefer true wit over fart jokes and characters over caricatures, I think you will love this movie.
Ben C (fr) wrote: It may be an improvement over the previous installment in the series, but it isn't great. The final fight between Dracula and Van Helsing was like a reversal; it was exciting, but it ended too quickly. And the concept of Van Helsing working at Hong Kong as a teacher is unusual, both for the right and the wrong reasons. However, the concept of the '7 Golden Vampires' was more unique and creative.

Robert H (au) wrote: Empire of the Ants is one of those films I just love even though it's not a great movie. Where the film excels is with the FX. Using some smarts, the filmmakers managed to bring about giant killer ants (and lots of them) without amasing a super huge budget and without the use of CG. These days computer generated ants would be used and the film would just feel stupid and almost as if it was made for a kids tv show.Though the film has a pretty amazing cast (Joan Collins, Robert Lansing, Jacqueline Scott, etc) they are never used to their full potential as the dialogue doesn't quite live up to their abilities. Of course, the whole story of giant kill ants terrorizing a bunch of lam-os attending a "purchase swampland in Florida" sales pitch is pretty weak already so when you add in the poor script and lack luster directing, Empire of the Ants isn't likely to win over much more than young kids... and those of us who are still kids at heart.
