KAMMs M (jp) wrote: Nicole Beharie stars in this off-Broadway-play-turned-indie-film as Piper, a suicidal shut-in suffering from Bi-Polar Disorder, who started a relationship with, Mollie whom she met online months ago. A knock on a door from John Sharp, who introduces himself as Mollie's brother who's come to talk her out of the thing's she's been threatening lately, turns Piper's world upside down.Originally titled, The Small of Her Back, Apartment 4E is written & directed by Russell Leigh Sharman and features an enthralling performance from Beharie that will leave you wanting to watch it again. It's a film that watches more like a stage production, which for many isn't appealing, but for me is a great way to keep my attention - a seemingly otherwise impossible feat. This is very easily one of my favorite performances from Beharie. Here, you can appreciate the subtleties of her acting, the tiny nuances that make her performances so powerful. If you want to see Nicole Beharie put in work, you want to see this film. Moreover, there's a message in this body of work - one that you aren't beat over the head with, yet still hits you pretty hard, giving you a new landscape of what mental disorder looks like. Beharie's bi-polar and secluded, Piper is believable, honest, and accurate. Overall it's an apt performance to say the least. Do yourself a favor and watch it!

Of the four prequels/sequels to The Exorcist, this is the best. (How The Exorcist II: The Heretic manages a tomato rating of 22% escapes me--that's the most boring movie I've ever seen.) While it would have been easy to just rehash the original by having young Father Merrin called in to exorcise a demon from another child, TE:TB has the more ambitious plot of Merrin, fallen priest and archeologist, investigating a mysterious church uncovered in Africa. The atmosphere grows in intensity and creepiness as the plot progresses toward (admittedly) a disappointing climax. As Merrin, Stellan Skarsgrd does an excellent job of developing a man torn between the Nazi atrocity that made him believe God doesn't exist and the supernatural horror that forces him to reexamine his beliefs.

Steve G (ru) wrote: Jimmy! The mom is a horrific wench. The film takes a weird turn, where the kids suddenly become kind of criminals, & Smith has to keep bailing them out. The snobiness was a very peculiar twist.Coburn is an incredible actor. A little overhanded. I'm very disappointed that his real identity isn't revealed at the end. That's what we were waiting for the whole time. Despite liking the film, that causes a major detraction. The ending seems so rushed. Like they had exactly 2 minutes to say 5 minutes worth of dialogue. It would have been so gratifying for him to show up the angry rich people, by showing that he's infinitely richer. Why set up if no payoff?! That's so frustrating. Anyway, it was still enjoyable. But it brings down a potentially great movie to a pretty good one.
