Matthew S (ru) wrote: A very odd and experimental adaptation of a short story by Melville into a very long and almost epic film. Certainly not intended for the mainstream, there is a great deal to be found in this seemly lost film from Leos Carax. Criterion? Where are you?

Matthew B (ca) wrote: The life and times of Charlie Chaplin: from his first stage performance before the age of ten to Vaudeville, to Mack Sennett's movies, to making his own movies, to winning an Oscar. Robert Downey Jr. was a great casting choice in the film, the movie started of great but then the movie went a bit boring.

Millo T (ca) wrote: It is surprising to see in how many things this movie predicted some of the future strategies of Republicans. Narratively, well, the movie is interesting but not outstanding.

Nick S (us) wrote: This lovely French film, whose title means "the beautiful nut" or "pain in the butt," takes four hours to show the inner workings of a painter whose ingenue is played by Emmanuelle Beart, in a lively performance. Rivette has outdone himself, and he couldn't have selected a more beautiful subject for a painting which ends up being Frenhofer's masterpiece. The plot elements of jealousy and a light bit of comedy (though very, very sparse) and also the entire undertaking of showing a painter at work, is largely affected by beautiful cinematography. The director and lead actress deserve high acclaim. It is no surprise to me that this film won second prize at Cannes. See it and be changed, IMHO. I loved it - four stars! Patience with this one, though as it is very long.

Paul D (kr) wrote: While there are quite a lot of impressive action stunts and sequences, the overall story is just not interesting. The whole time I was watching it I really could not care about anything that was going on. Only worth watching if you really like Paul Walker. Otherwise, I'd recommend skipping it.

Racquel D (au) wrote: Mira Nair is one my favorite directors and this movie has become a part of my life because it opened me up to a whole new world. This movie was ahead of its time especially for the country it was based in. The message of this movie is a lot deeper than one may think and there is actually more than one message.
