This film is a series of letters, photos and video cassettes which women often send in to certain newspapers. By visualizing their story-telling (the name given by the psychologists to their fantasies) the film portrays the confessions, the secret longings, the adventures, recollections, dreams, desires and fantasies of these women. It is an open secret that most women dream of forbidden affairs, secret lovers and hasty encounters but when it comes down to it they lack the courage to pursue their dreams.

I completely understand why Ti West tried to get his name off of this film, but how much of the blame he should take is still up in the air for discussion. The acting is terrible, the writing is so bad it made me cringe every time a character spoke, and the story is so stupid that you can't take it seriously whatsoever. The first one had an old school charm about it that made for a reasonably entertaining, albeit conventional, horror film. This one ratchets up the gore, throws in distasteful stunts, and is not fun to watch at all. They clearly had run out of ideas fast because they film adds in animation that is completely out of place at the beginning and end to pan the length and a couple of the plot strands get left in the dust. Just a horrible waste of time. One of the worst sequels I've ever seen.

(ca) wrote: Definitely a guilty pleasure. Enjoy the *cough* cinematography and do your best to ignore the (almost non-existent) plot and (ropey) acting. I can see how it would upset sensitive viewers, but the film's obvious lightheartedness and self-aware production values render this a relatively harmless form of titilation.

It's so bad it transcends badness to the point that I'm actually recommending this film. We haven't seen anything this gloriously ridiculous since "Showgirls", and I loved it for that. The plot draws you in despite the fact that it's completely preposterous simply because it's so intriguing. Plausibility is at an all-time low, but you can't help but wonder "What If?". But the screenwriters and director Barbet Schroeder take everything to the extreme and that's when the real fun begins. Cop Andy Garcia gets so many people killed trying to save his son's life that you just have to laugh. I couldn't wait to see how far this film would go. Another big part of the film's disturbing appeal to me is the performance by Michael Keaton. He's obviously trying a desperate measure to revitalize his waning career with this sadistic, wildly entertaining change of pace role. And then there's Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden slumming in the role of a surgeon who specializes in threatening every patient in the hospital regardless of their affliction. The film also has the distinction of possibly being the worst movie of the 90's to be directed by a talented filmmaker. Schroeder was obviously trying for some commercial success here with this critical disaster. I'm almost ashamed to admit that I liked it, but I have to admire a movie with the cajones to be as flagrantly dumb as this one.

It doesn't entirely coalesce but around halfway through things started to become interesting - of course, the earlier uncomfortable social dynamics are probably more consistent with director Joseph Losey's other output (especially when he started working with Pinter). However, I was there primarily for the sci-fi in Hammerscope this time and it doesn't really disappoint - perhaps it feels even weirder (these cold-as-ice children and their predicament) because it's crammed uneasily into another picture. But such is/was the world where the nuclear threat was inserted surreally into everyone's daily existence (see also Peter Watkins' The War Game, filmed around the same time in Britain). Worth a look.
