Marvin P (fr) wrote: There's a point where a film is so bad that it's good. Piranha 3DD not only goes past that point, it makes it incredibly painful to watch. Especially when comparing it to its awesome predecessor.

Edward B (de) wrote: If this is an example of the current state of Indie filmmaking in Canada, things are worse than I thought.Movies like Dazed and Confused, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, and This is Spinal Tap celebrate music and how a specific time's culture is influenced by it. There's so much that can be done, particularly if the subject involves teens all flocking to see a band they all like. Lots of room for character development, lots of room to examine a band's impact on a group of people. Not so in the case of Bruce McDonald's This Movie Is Broken. The film focuses on the band Broken Social Scene, a popular Indie band that hails from Toronto. The setting is 2009, amidst a garbage strike that plagued the city for weeks. Because of this strike, Broken Social Scene had to cancel a show, but decided they'd still perform for free by the Harbourfront. This is the background for a cliche love story that offers very little insight into anything about romance. Bruno wakes up next to Caroline, a one night stand that he hopes he'll be able to turn into a full out relationship, since he's had a crush on her for a long time. She leaves for France tomorrow, so he has one night to convince her to stay. Hmm, I've seen this movie countless times. Now the problem is that the movie is too focused on showing the band's concert that it forgets about the story. The resolution happens, and you couldn't care less. Also, a movie based on a band should suggest why this band is important enough to have their own film. I don't like Kiss, but I was able to enjoy them in Detroit Rock City. I'm not a fan of hip hop, but 8 Mile was great. Broken Social Scene, to me, is mediocre at best, but this movie does nothing to celebrate the band's impact on the Indie scene in Toronto (which is massive), or anything at all that makes you appreciate these artists. This movie is broken all right. And it'll be too difficult to fix. Just avoid it.

Dianealice R (de) wrote: I know well this kind of hard movie, I saw and liked: A Serbian Film, Philosophy Of A Knife, and the very goods french movies: Martyrs directed by Pacal Laugier and A l 'intrieur (Inside) but this one apparently bored me, not a story just a succession of unbearable stages without suspense, happily it's short but already too much. Is It really based on actress own experience? I would like to know more about that...

Eric R (ag) wrote: Melvin and Howard tells the story of Melvin, a milkman who is barely getting by. One night Melvin picks up a shaggy bum and offers him a ride back into Vegas. The bum is hurt and seems a bit off mentally, but Melvin is nice and when they arrive he offers him a quarter. Melvin returns to his wife and children not realizing that the man he has just given a ride is Howard Hughes himself. The film spends a lot of time showing Melvin's financial struggles. His wife leaves him twice, the second time for good, because he can't pay the bills. Melvin is sorta a lovable loser and although he tries he can't seem to really stay on his feet financially. One day a will is dropped off by a mysterious man, which happens to be Howard Hughes will which is leaving him over 100 million dollars. Melvin and Howard is a sharp script, and its really no wonder that it won best screenplay award. The film really focues on Melvin, as he doesnt even learn about the money from Hughes til about 20 minutes left in the film. Mary Steenburgen is also great as Melvin's eccentric wife.

Stephen C (au) wrote: Before they went on to create some of the most memorable British films ever made they gave us tight little thrillers like this one. Its no mistake that this feels a little like a Hitchcock movie in places ,as Powell had worked for Hitch in the early part of his career. The best thing about the film is that even the bad guys are given dimensions in there roles. Conrad Veidt is good here as a u Boat captain sent on a mission to destroy the British fleet at Scapa flow. Pressburger never results to obvious panto villainy ,insted giving Veidt some ace dialogue. With a smashing twist and of course Powells masterfull visual eye this really is a perfect Sunday Afternoon movie treat

Julia L (us) wrote: This is one of those movies that totally flat-lined for me. I watched it only because a friend liked and recommended it. However, I had serious doubts about it, after having read the synopsis and seen a photo of Sean Penn in drags. I am not a Penn fan, although I would not rule out a movie just because he is in it.In this particular movie, I really disliked him for lots of reasons: the exasperating monotone of his speech; the phoniness of all his "conversations"; the weird and yet dull interaction with the many bizarre characters populating the movie, etc...The word "boring" is used quite often when we explain why we did not like a movie. Basically, we did not feel emotionally or intellectually engaged by the story unfolding onscreen. Nothing works against this type of disengagement. No rational explanation will convince you about the deep, inner meaning the director, scriptwriter, actors and other reviewers saw or tried to instill into the story. Therefore, for me this is the ultimate boring movie. A plot so thin I lost track of it after 10 minutes, totally disengaging and disengaged characters, far too much artsy Penn. I gave up, 1 hour and 6 minutes into it and I am not even sure why I lasted that long. By then, I still had no clue about what was going on and I definitely stopped caring even earlier .....
