(fr) wrote: In my top movie picks of all time. The first frame was so gripping and funny (interviews with young itinerant labors from rural China) it yanked me right into the movie. Why I found the movie particularly powerful was because it portrays the quite desperation of being poor in a society where the poor are also utterly powerless as to their own future. This movie really showcases how each little misfortune can be magnified so very much for persons living without any safety net on the fringes of urban life. It is an indictment of the "progress" China has been undergoing. It squelches the rural poor underfoot and then uses their blood to grease the wheels of capitalism further. One really perceives what it is to be poor when one realizes the difference in scale of the dreams of the various characters. Guei never aspires to anything more than owning his bike and make a living in a job he feels fortunate to have found. Even at the end, in the last frame when he walks with his mangled bicycle on his back, the tenacity of his little dream is still alive even as his life has gone through so many travails to hold on to it. A must-see.
