Jim H (au) wrote: A father and son move to a Denmark village where they try to make ends meet amid poverty and few opportunities for advancement.Heart-breaking and stark, Pelle the Conquerer is a strong coming-of-age film featuring an incredible performance by the legendary Max von Sydow. Von Sydow captures his character's desperate search for hope and a future in his most vulnerable performance to date. The film is able to get its audience to believe in these characters' chances despite the fact that the film simultaneously creates a world in which hope seems ridiculous. The murder of peasants, the anti-Swede prejudice, and the domineering overseers all combine to add to cold, desolate milieu.Overall, Max von Sydow and the atmosphere of this film make this film a remarkably compelling story.

Alexander N (nl) wrote: A work of genius by a true master in Stuart Gordon at the height of his career, when Empire Pictures commanded decent budgets and effects work. Deft use of mostly interiors and sound stages once again. Brilliant acting from the great Jeffrey Combs and always steady Barbara Crampton, who reverse their respective roles in The Re-Animator to great effect. Wonderful practical effects, great set design and lighting. It's everything you want a classic American 1980s horror film to be, and it's also one of the best Lovecraft adaptations ever (Gordon directed nearly all the other contenders).

Allan C (ag) wrote: James Garner is the sheriff of a small costal California town (modern day, not old west) investigating the murder of a woman in this Raymond Chandler-like mystery. Katharine Ross, Hal Holbrook, June Allyson, Tom Ewell , Peter Lawford, Edmond O'Brien and Arthur O'Connell are among the suspects, but sadly the film is rather slow and not all that engaging. Garner is always easy to watch on screen, so that helped hold my interest compared to if there had been a lesser actor in the lead.

Sean F (de) wrote: For me the comedic timing was a little off. The execution and narrative structure could've been stronger. A handful of moments will make you smile, but after a while the comedy becomes frustrating.

KARLA E (kr) wrote: Love it. Kinda revisit it every chance I get. Marsden was perfect and so easy to fall for.
