Philip W (kr) wrote: Emotional and touching at points, The Fault in Our Stars has a few bright spots but ultimately, it fails to advance past a stereotypical cancer film. Shailene Woodley is solid throughout the film portraying a cancer patient who develops a relationship with Ansel Elgort's character Gus, but Elgort's character comes across as a typical flamboyant boy with some very generic, static qualities to go with choppy, unfitting dialogue. The story itself stretches our beliefs as it becomes challenging to believe some of the scenarios the two get into, making this into a average film despite it's bigger message.

Rachel P (kr) wrote: obviously low budget, ameteur film....story was unoriginal and progressed at a snail's pace. I am usually a fan of lesser known low budget films (like Strays) but this was just a poorly made movie.

Jack Y (kr) wrote: Surreal, artistic, romantic lm with strong performances from Cormack and Urban. Almost all of it runs on symbols and interpretations, which can prove frustrating to mainstream audiences, though arthouse ones will love it. Think of it as a fairytale set in rural New Zealand.

Allan C (mx) wrote: I liked Richard Stanley's first film "Hardware", but didn't like this one as much. It's a much more ambitious film, mixing horror and surrealism to the degree that it almost resembles an Alejandro Jodorowsky film. Much of the film is great, particularly some of the horrific imagery, but much of the film is also flawed.

Jason M (ru) wrote: One of my favourite films of all time. Produced, written, directed and acted by Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda, this really demonstrates the brilliance of these 2 counter-culture Hollywood figures. This is a slice of young angst and Americana from the late 60s. The hippie and anti-establishment movement was taking shape with America's young and this film was a rallying cry. Peter Fonda as Captain America and Dennis Hopper as Billy in their defining roles. Even Jack Nicholson joins them for the ride at one point. Dennis Hopper reprieves qualities of his character here with that in Apocalypse Now. As our 2 anti-heroes plod along their journey, they become involved in different situations and experiences. Note an early appearance by Phil Spector. They visit a brothel where a young Karen Black and Toni Basel ("Hey Mickey!") are prostitutes. There is even a trip-out sequence at a New Orleans graveyard for those who want to drop acid at the end of the film. They visit a farmer's house and share a meal with his family:"You've got a nice place. It's not every man that can live off the land, you know. You do your own thing in your own time. You should be proud." Easy Rider was an influential film in its day. I even remember wearing an Easy Rider t-shirt as a young lad. The film defined the hippie way of living off the land, not being tied down to capital, man. Unfortunately, this great film seems to have much of its lustre over the decades.

Devon B (jp) wrote: Opening with the musical number "We're in the Money" (as sung by a young and sexy Ginger Rogers) and closing with the distinctly downtrodden downer "Forgotten Man", Gold Diggers of 1933 manages to encapsulate the era of Great Depression Hollywood all in one swoop. Producer Barney Hopkins (Ned Sparks) has a great idea for a musical: a celebration of the Great Depression. There's just one problem, and it's a small problem really, all he needs is the money to put on the show, and someone to write it and star in it. Of course, living next door to his troupe of showgirls is the most amazing song-writer (Dick Powell) who is also a great singer and a millionaire in disguise, and he solves all the above problems with a snap of his fingers. Of course, this exposes the millionaire song-writer to the world, and his snobby, snootish brother is subsequently able to track him down. He discovers he's engaged to be married to one of the show girls, and, suspecting her of being a gold digger, he goes to confront her and "buy out" her brother's obligation to marry her. When he confronts the wrong show girl, they decide to teach him a lesson. Gold Diggers of 1933 is a lot of fun, and features some great musical numbers. The aforementioned Ginger Rogers plays a character named Fay Fortune, and of course is referred to often as "Miss Fortune", tee hee. One of the main numbers in the film, "Pettin' in the Park" seemed so corny at first, but as the production progressed, it grew on me considerably. Plus, like all the songs here, it's quite catchy and memorable. There's a lot that's corny in this film, but there's just as much that's genuine. Either way, it's a great time capsule-piece of entertainment.

Jon R (ag) wrote: This film needs to be understood in it's context to be appreciated. It isn't about religion, it isn't about school struggles it's about the significance of life choices and their implications. While some of the tensions do seem forced the filmmakers avoid the mistake of oversimplifying the material. The characters are typical cliches of average people because these are the struggles of average people.
