The filmmaking feels masterful and controlled, filmed in long, often beautiful shots with characters that feel real, although mysterious. I don't doubt that the director has a clear vision of what he wants to accomplish here, even though I look at many of the shots and cannot understand why I'm watching them. It's just that assured. It's a spectacle to behold when you stand back and look at it all, massive in length and stylistic ambition. I really liked the story, as SLOW moving as it was, and it was sometimes fascinating and very engaging when it was about its plot. But for all of the absorbing parts there are small stretches of "why am I watching this" and "what does this mean" and not getting anything out of particular shots that last very long and confused me. I grasped onto motifs here and there but was waiting for something to piece them together and over the last 40 minutes or so it just became hard for me to find to the point where I didn't know what to think. For a movie of such length, I wished there was more reward. It seems almost impossible to be able to draw a conclusion from the movie without reading up on it and I fault the director for being so mysterious about his meanings even though he probably knows he's putting the audience through what sometimes borders on an endurance test. I enjoyed the movie when it stuck to the story and found some scenes to be pretty powerful and memorable, but much of it is the opposite, and it confuses the rest. I don't doubt that this movie has a lot of big ideas on its mind, and I do like the challenge overall, but I wish it didn't seem so purposely difficult to unlock them.

And the burlesque! THE BURLESQUE! This is the kind of movie that dusts off the misunderstandings about the art of burlesque and holds if up proudly :) The acts were gorgeous. Tasteful, pretty and just lovely to watch. I loved it!
