Dillinger P (es) wrote: Natural Born Killers is like a psychedelic nightmare, while on crack. Its a violent assault of the senses, a brutal and ultra violent spin on the media, an exploitation film, attacking exploitation. It's bonkers, completely over the top and brilliant in so many instances, you might just need to pause for air or slap yourself for laughing at something so vile, and thats the charm this film has, it makes you so uncomfortable that all you can essentially do is, well laugh. Natural Born Killers is in a nutshell about a psychotic couple, Micky and Mallory Knox, after a killing spree that takes the lives of 52 innocent people and spins the world into facination with the new Charles Manson like killers of the decade, they are hunted down by a corrupt cop, held prisoner by a lunatic and thrust upon the public by an egotistical journalist. Its kind of hard to root for anyone in this film, they are all extremely detestable, however Oliver Stones take on an idea by Quentin Tarintino, could not care less, it wants you to feel violated, this film is clearly an attack on a society that has gone to shit and clearly a society we still live in, this film hasnt dated one bit. The cast are brilliant Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis are hypnotic, psychotic and hilariously kinetic as the off the wall couple, they ooze chemistry, bamboozle with whit and murder with charisma and charm, its an horrifying mix and it works brilliantly. You buy these guys as a couple, you buy them as sick and twisted individuals, hell bent on starting an anarchy and frighteningly enough, they are the closest thing this film comes to as a relatable human being, which is frightening. Tom Sizemore is a disgusting cop Scagnetti, who lives off sexually attacking woman, mowing down bad guys and publishing books about it, Sizemore is transfixed with Mallory, in the most ugliest and vile of ways, you cant help but feel your skin crawl any time he closes in on her. Tommy Lee Jones, is hysterical as a bat shit Prison Warden, who wants to exploit the media after the capture of the rogue couple, his interests solely focused on profit and notoriety. Robert Downey Jr, is Wayne Gale, the self absorbed journalist, who is interested in nothing more than his career, even in the face of death, he is willing to not only sell himself but turn to the dark side, in order to feel some form of rush from his shallow life. And Rodney Dangerfield will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand tall for years to come. Its a brilliant cast, in a brilliantly art house and clearly drug induced film. The writing is philisophical and charismatic, hilarious and distressing, it has so many pop shots at culture of human society in general, its blatantly obvious this is not going to be every single persons cup of tea. The actual imagery and production itself is bonkers, projections of nightmarish imagery, flashes of rabbit and bloodied faces, more dutch angles than a student film, make this one brutal assault on your eyes, even the edit is completely snappy and temprimental. The violence is atrocious but thats the point, unlike todays horror porn, Natural Born Killers actually makes a point, by showing you just how insane the violence is, this film just flat out would not work under any other circumstance, it needs to showcase the atrocities in order to get its point across. This is a no holds barred street fight and it gets ugly almost instantly. Thats not to say that what Oliver Stone has done here is all perfect, it is so hyper realistic and zany, sometimes its completely gets lost within itself, its message to can sometimes be lost under a sea of red a bullets. The film also offers no release, no remorse and no down time, meaning that there is no time to reflect upon what your watching, your just constantly being punched in the gut and being forced to watch. It can become a bit preachy and sometimes its also clear that this film feels slightly immature, however when it gets it right, it really gets it right. This is not for everyone, the feint hearted need not apply and the politically correct police might want to give this a wide berth, but for anyone looking for a brutally over the top assault on the senses, its got to be Natural Born Killers.

D M (it) wrote: A modern-day Dr Frankenstein uses his kid-Igor to kidnap a 20-something in order to steal his eye to complete his monster. The experiment goes awry, sending the all the mentioned folk back to 1865 along with Frankenstein's monster which replicated itself by the dozens. Both sides of the War for Southern Independence attempt to use the sci-fi technology in order to further their respective causes. Too many typical tropes in a very a-typical story.
