Shane S (kr) wrote: It is difficult to pinpoint exactly why this movie works so well, an excellent blend of drama, romance and crisp believable dialogue. The cast is deep and deliver strong performances. A captivating look into rock-and-roll circa 1970. The film is not really about any one particular theme be it young love, discovery or friendship. It is really more of a trip, a road trip, discovering and probing all of these things and more. I like to think of it as a look into the nature of basic human relationships (in their many forms) tested by the turmoil of sex, drugs and rock-and-roll. Sometimes people do noble things, sometimes selfish thing, but always believable things. All of these elements create a very warm film that is surprisingly human in its approach. The sound track is also very strong and paired well with each scene. One scene was particularly memorable: a simple sing-a-long on a bus against the back drop of a classic song. Most people have at least one strong memory of this simple true Americana pleasure from their childhood and this scene taps into that emotion. This was, in my humble opinion, Cameron Crowe's last really strong movie after a number of hits (including Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Say Anything and Singles). These movies all share a common bond in that they were crafted with care, attention and a sharp eye for detail creating engrossing time capsules of these time periods (or places) and the social relationships of the characters. My small critique of this film, and most of Crowe's work, is that he can be heavy handed with the sitcom one-liners. While some of these lines pay off really well, others are a bit jarring.

Steve K (es) wrote: Effective, if a bit silly. Skerritt is earnest, though never quite Italian.

Yuri B (mx) wrote: This film was truly astounding... the only knock for me was Costner not even trying to do an accent... but that was it.

Jacob P (au) wrote: Pretty much cliched and predictable. With a sheriff that could figure out all that from tiny details, he just got ended in the most stupidest way. Had some interesting bits though.

Ted W (us) wrote: A deceptively simple detective story, filled with tension, explosive violence and loads of late 1950's French "cool," this had me on the edge of my seat. The characters are finely drawn, understandable and yet still cool. The soundtrack apparently improvised while watching the film by Miles Davis is outstanding. The denouement is unexpected, but satisfying. Jeanne Moreau has never been lovelier.

Dave J (gb) wrote: Tuesday, August 16, 2010 (1957) Heaven Knows, Mr, Allison DRAMA/ WAR Deborah Kerr who played a nun for the 1947 "Black Narcissus" as Sister Clodagh is reprising the role again, but as Sister Angela stranded on an isolated island near Japan with a marine, Robert Mitchum as Mr Allison during WWII where they would build a rapport! Although, based on a novel written by Charles Shaw, director John Huston has made a film similar to this before in 1951 starring Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn called "The African Queen", with the only difference that the setting was completely different! There is nothing else happening in the film than to see two people secluded on an island meaning that the war serves only as a backdrop and that the film solely relies on it's two veteran actors performances of Kerr (who can do this role on her sleep) and Mitchum whose been in previous war films other than this leaving the question whether viewers can identitfy with it's two characters- and the answer is an obvious yes! Upon seeing this , one would expect to see the "Hell In The Pacific" with Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mifune, "The Black Stallion" the boy bonding with a stallion, and the terrible "The Blue Lagoon" sarring a younger Brooke Shields and of course "The African Queen"! The other plus I forgot to mention what this film did what "The Black Narcissus" didn't do ( or perhaps I didn't notice it) was to allow Deborah Kerr to speak her actual 'Irish' accent as a nun, and that was kind of refreshing as well! Strong 3 out of 4

Stuart M (us) wrote: This film has a strong reputation as one of the classics of cinema but I'm not sure I see what all the fuss is about. The basic idea is that a family is falling apart, but it doesn't seem to have anything else to say other than what a shame that is. I was expecting some hard-hitting social commentary or a detailed character study. Not a bad film, but I feel it's rather overrated.
