Brian C (fr) wrote: Not a particularly good movie. Starts off quite good and the premise is really neat, but the atrocious acting and lack of any real tension or progression of plot leaves the viewer wishing they skipped this one.
Carolyn P (us) wrote: There's so much to love about this movie that it's hard to know where to begin. The cast is impeccable, with Peter Dinklage in the leading role as Munk, the sad screenwriter beaten down by the world to such an extent that all he has left is his old dog. So cut off from his former life in Hollywood that he is running a lousy laundry in NY, Munk is drawn back into his strange circle of friends and the bitter betrayals that caused him to leave in the first place. Dinklage carries this film with immense dignity and pathos, while actors famous and not-so-famous cavort and swirl around him. Tim Roth. Carol Kane. Rosie Perez. Steve Buscemi in a Goldilocks wig. Even Lena Headey (who plays Dinklage's sister Cercei in "Game of Thrones") passes through. All of this adds to the eerie otherworldliness of this tale, one that culminates with a Fellini-esque party. "Pete Smalls" has a strange and complicated plot, but it all comes together by the last reel. Thoughtful, smart, and easily misunderstood, this movie is worth viewing if you are willing to scratch below the surface.

Stuart M (de) wrote: A poignant story based on the diary of Nella Last, who described herself as a Housewife, 49, in her first submission to a World War 2 Mass Archive project. She was to keep up the submissions for nearly 30 years. The film follows Nella??s life during wartime from 1939 to 1945, as she blossoms from a timid mouse, unable to come out her husband??s shadow, to a determined organizational leader of the Women??s Voluntary Service and the Red Cross. Victoria Wood does a great job of portraying the sadness, humor and often poverty of wartime. She lives through the personality changes of her sons, and the deaths of their companions. all the while growing as a person, becoming more assertive, until by the end of the war, she almost will miss it.

The beautiful girl may be a spy also; either way, their business associates in Japan become suspicious of their intentions fairly quickly."How do girls usually act when they're kissed?""They don't turn green."John Huston, director of The Maltese Falcon, The African Queen, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, The Man Who Would be King, Moulin Rouge, Key Largo, and The Asphalt Jungle, delivers Across the Pacific. The storyline for this picture is interesting but not as intense as some of Hitchcock's work in the same genre. The script and acting is wonderful and the cast includes Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Sydney Green Street, and Frank Wilcox."You make me sick and if you stay here one minute longer I'll prove it to you." I grabbed this movie off Turner Classic Movies (TCM) when I discovered Bogart and Huston made this together. I am a huge fan of Key Largo and was hoping this would be on par with that picture; unfortunately, this fell a little short. This is an entertaining classic film with solid characters and great lines but wasn't as good as it could have been."I pity the woman you marry."Grade: B-
