Theodore F (au) wrote: Jerry is the titular "big mouth," who is anxiously and spastic-ally seeking a helpful audience to the extraordinary story of how he fished a scuba diver out of the ocean who gave him an incomplete map to the location of diamonds before automatic weapons sprayed toward the both of them from a yacht near the shore. People are either to insane or indifferent to listen but Jerry manages to fall in love with a sympathetically sweet (if not exactly comprehending) flight attendant. Jerry also didn't realize the scuba diver he fished is his exact double, who double crossed the angry gangsters who threaten his life.Crane shots and lithe camera movements punctuate self-referential gags such as the return of "Professor Kelp" and the incomparable Lewis regular Del Moore as a snobbish and harried hotel desk clerk. The climax seas everyone run in circles around Sea World (amidst bombastic big band music and surf rock on the soundtrack) before a return to the actual ocean shore where the story started. A nameless governmental bureaucratic functionary narrates, a comical symbol of the sane and stable sought after and ultimately illusory. Jerry at his most damaged and vital. Highly recommended.
Kevin M W (it) wrote: This film's entire existence is merely as an real world answer to the James Bond craze prevalent in its day and then simply to say: "that's not true." Well what is the truth then? Sad little men sulking in shadows, lying to everyone, especially themselves. Burton is really good as one of the men, a guy who hates himself playing a guy who hates himself playing a guy who hates himself. Its really grim but good.
