Gimly M (fr) wrote: Alright, so I suppose it's possible that I misrepresented Defendor in my announcement post, just a tad. Maybe. Okay! I admit it, I said it was going to be ridiculous and pointless and in actual fact it may have been good. Like, really good. You'll have to forgive me for my mistake though, as I had previously seen the trailer only, and it really does just look low budget version of Kick-Ass, or just some "new" rehash of a non-hilarious American Comedy. Turned out not to be the case at all. Given there's a moment or two of mild humour, in essence Defendor is a drama, despite its self-classification as comedy. The film plays it small scale, and lacks the glitz and glamour of Kick-Ass or Super Hero Movie, but it's not a positive, upbeat film, in fact it's downright depressing, so it totally works. Arthur Poppington (Woody Harrelson - Natural Born Killers, A Scanner Darkly, No Counrty for Old Men, Seven Pounds, Zombieland, 2012) is a construction worker by day, and Super Hero Defendor by night. It's Harrelson himself as well as his interactions with others and their's with him that make the film what it is.Defendor stars Kat Dennings (Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, Thor) stars opposite Harrelson as a troubled and troublesome crackwhore (no seriously, she's a prostitute and crack addict). Elias Kosteas (Let me in, Shutter Island, The Killer Inside me, The Fourth Kind, The Haunting on Connecticut, Zodiac, Skinwalkers, House, Apt Pupil) fills out the majority of the antagonism as a bent cop. And finally Michael Kelly (Dawn of the Dead (2004), Changeling, Law Abiding Citizen, The Adjustment Bureau) plays Harrelson's caring and sympathetic boss. All of these guys are incredible on screen, and while they never quite manage to steal the limelight from Harrelson, they all compliment each other, as well as the film as a whole, perfectly.Don't be fooled by Defendor's trailer, it is made of lies. Really this movie is a sad but great story about a mentally unstable man with a childlike sense of right and wrong, just trying to make the world he doesn't understand a better place.75%-Gimly

Some "high speed chases", shoot-outs, drama, a love-rectangle, the amazingly captivating Jane Russell as the beautiful villainess Belle Starr, a couple great saloon songs which almost make this film a musical (but not) and more. There is a fair bit of subtle humour held within. This film, obviously not intended to be taken too seriously, muddles with the historical demise of the Dalton Gang by throwing in the fictitious "Belle Starr Gang" along with some other great characters. Included in these characters are the comical Jack Lambert as Ringo and the eventually endearing George Brent as Tom Bradfield. An absolute classic scene in the finale as Mac & Bob Dalton run out of ammunition and then decide to "walk out of this town", falling in a hail of bullets. The scene is reminiscent of Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid and I found it equally, but forcibly, dramatic. Very neat film I had to wait 48 years to see but will happily watch again.
