Premeditated Murder

Premeditated Murder

Men, women, and war. Jelena Panic is a young woman in Belgrade in the early 1990s, during Serbia's war with Croatia; she's making a book of her grandmother's diaries from the end of World War II. She takes up with Bogdan, a young soldier recovering from war wounds. He helps her with her grandmother's story, a tragic triangle involving her effete and well-educated husband and an uneducated major, a Chekist who has, perhaps, the power to save a political prisoner who is the grandmother's friend. As Jelena wonders which man was her grandfather (the Chekist or the husband), Bogdan recovers from his wounds and must decide whether to return to the front. Jelena pleads; duty calls.

Warner P (mx) wrote: A very well presented, wonderfully acted film. Great acting to produce a faithful account of Nelson the man and Winnie the activist. A very moving film.

Alex V (de) wrote: An absolutely unparalleled and ultra-enthralling look at the caste system and class differences in 1970's Chile. The juxtaposition of the lives of two young Chilean boys who go to the same private school is truly moving. All this painted against the backdrop of a changing government which saw the fall of President Salvador Allende and the rise of the vicious General Pinochet which would change Chile forever. The cinematography was gritty and impeccable, the acting unquestionable and there are some truly earth-shattering scenes in this film that make things incredibly intriguing. Particularly for me -- because if I hadn't been adopted I may have ended up like many in this film....:(

Bjrnar K (mx) wrote: Ikke fullt s syk som jeg hadde forventet men en langt bedre film enn jeg hadde regnet med. Kommer nok ikke til se den igjen.

Alice S (ru) wrote: Epic freaking musical about a singing comedienne wedging her way into her big break. The beginning is a bit slow, and I tired of Fanny's repetitive self-deprecation about her lack of traditional beauty, but Barbra Streisand is sassy and ballsy, and my word, is Omar Sharif not the most dashing and earnest paramour? He says "I love you" so shyly yet tenderly! Nicky's love and admiration are so soaring, and that's what makes the main relationship conflict of Fanny outgrowing Nicky and the show-stopping number "My Man" all the more tragic in a mere mortals sort of way.

Kyle B (it) wrote: Judy Garland looked pretty good in her big number, especially considering she was so doped up on prescription drugs and on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

Rorshach S (ru) wrote: When it's not ripping off The Grapes of Wrath, HGWMV opts to be a slow, concentrated look into the working-class life.

Adrian B (es) wrote: Highly strange documentary that displays the life of Robert Crumb, a comic writer who has a super deranged mind. It seems that Crumb is obsessed with sex with strange creatures, and so he feels that he is obliged to display graphic and disturbing images of nudity in his strips. Interestingly, he has a huge following with his underground comics, even with the women. Such a fascinating documentary, but one perhaps that is memorable for all the wrong reasons, which is of course the intent. Crumb is so peculiar, so creepy, that is it hard to understand how he has a wife and daughter based on his mind. He also comes from such a tragic family, composed of one brother who lived with his family in Los Angeles (and tragically killed himself after the documentary was made); and another brother who was heavily on drugs in San Francisco. He also had sisters who declined to be interviewed for the film. Definitely worth a viewing, even for those who like lesser graphic and more famous comics such as Peanuts or Garfield.

Tommie D (es) wrote: Underlying cause never mentioned! Congress and banking regulators pretty much drove the banks to give home loans to those who had little chance to pay. Seemed like a good idea to some, give the little guy a chance to ride the escalator up on home appreciation. However, no money down and history of poor credit often go with default.
