(gb) wrote: I have never been in bigger disagreeance with a rating. Although frantic, absurd and not exactly laugh out loud funny I found the charm in this flick. Oh yeah, there are flaws... simple, pointless and unresolved plots and dragged out scenes, Besides not being a typical comedy, it's not a romance, action or tearjerker either so it is difficult to define. If you're into character driven pieces then, and only then, may you find this interesting. Perhaps it would have done better as a short film or offered a little more in the way of kitsch to at least give it a cult status. I don't know. I do know I found the personalities intriguing and likeable. Maybe I just like the feel of anything British... and by the way, I thought the accents were brilliant. So many people like to slag American actors for doing English accents and feel a sense of pride assuming it must be bad when they really haven't a clue. Actually done quite naturally. Surprising too how many actors in this are American.Anyhow, not everyone's cup of tea for sure, but I thought there would be some merit given where deserved. If you like quirky, dialogue driven movies with heart (albiet, not many do) I think you'll enjoy this just fine.
(fr) wrote: So many interesting themes, images and ideas presented here. The closeness of death is always present--the murder and the body, the pretend drowning and then almost drowning of the children, Caylin-Calandria's mother, Claire's close call with the murderer. The image of female bodies in the water-the murdered girl, Claire, Caylin-Calandria, and Claire. The children are also obsessed with the drowned town beneath the water. The sense of alienation is another theme--the alienation of the aborigines from the whites in Australia, the sense of separation of Claire from everyone, even her husband and child, whom she left after his birth for 18 months, the children grounded for misbehavior, the men taking themselves off to fish and, of course, the shunning of the men who left the murdered girl in the water while they fished. In the end it is the final dealing with the body and the spirit of the dead girl that brings them all together.

(us) wrote: A taunt, riveting and first-rate thriller with a twist. A compelling, well-character drawn and masterfully crafted crafted thriller from Director, Clint Eastwood. Eastwood is brilliant, he gives a great and gritty performance. Laura Linney is excellent. Ed Harris is terrific. It`s a utterly exciting and pulse-pounding thrill-ride. A fantastic movie. It delivers top-notch acting, tightly-paced plot and outstanding craftsmanship. Thrillers don`t get anymore exciting or smart than this one.
